Who needs the Oscars? Ben Affleck may have been snubbed by the Academy Award nominations, but he took center stage at the Golden Globes Sunday night. Affleck claimed the best director honor and his film, "Argo," won the award for best drama.

"Look, I don't care what the award is," Affleck said while accepting the director's award, going on to extol the virtues of his fellow nominees.

Dennis Hopper's lost prints on show in Berlin

Paul Newman sits in Malibu, Calif., 1964.

The Journal of Photography — Lying hidden away in Dennis Hopper’s home until their discovery months after the artist’s death in 2010, this collection of photographs, exhibited in 1969-70 at the Fort Worth Art Center Museum, and now in Berlin, is a testament to Hopper’s prolific and enormous talent behind the camera. These photographs are spontaneous, intimate, poetic, observant, and decidedly political. While some are portraits of figures within Hopper’s circle of actor, artist, musician, and poet friends — including Jane Fonda, Paul Newman, and Robert Rauschenberg — they also include images from his extensive travels in Los Angeles, New York, London, Mexico, and Peru. Hopper’s abiding support of the civil rights movement and social justice is evident in his shots from the march on Selma and Harlem street scenes. Throughout this volume Hopper’s sensitive, keenly observant eye shines through, making it clear that he was a deeply committed chronicler of the events that were unfolding around him.

    GeoEye

An image from the GeoEye1 satellite, acquired on June 7, 2009, shows the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles.

    Holiday calendar: Hooray for Hollywood

By Alan Boyle, Science Editor, NBC News

In honor of this year's Golden Globe nominees, here's a picture of the landmark Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, as seen by the GeoEye 1 satellite from a height of 425 miles (684 kilometers).

The sign, which spells out the name of the cinema world's most famous locale in 45-foot-high (14-meter-high) letters, was originally created as an advertisement in 1923 and is now protected and promoted by the Hollywood Sign Trust.

Some folks used to say that China's Great Wall was the only human-made landmark visible from outer space, but even if that was ever true, the rise of high-resolution satellite imagery has made that claim as obsolete as the silent movies. Come to think of it, far more obsolete: After all, the film with the most Golden Globe nominations this year is a new-wave silent movie titled "The Artist."

Police hold back a crowd outside Grauman's Chinese Theater on July 27 after a crowd became unruly outside the Hollywood film premiere of a documentary about the Electric Daisy Carnival rave, throwing bottles and vandalizing cars and refusing orders to disperse after they were forced to leave an overcrowded theater, authorities said.

    NBCLosAngeles.com reports:

An angry crowd threw rocks and set fires on Hollywood Boulevard and police in riot gear fired bean bags late Wednesday after people were turned away from an invitation-only party and screening of a movie about a popular rave festival. Continue reading.
