Orb grazes under the watchful eyes of exercise rider Jennifer Patterson (2nd R) and trainer Shug McGaughey (R) after an early morning workout in preparation for the upcoming 138th running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, on May 17. The Preakness Stakes, the second leg of U.S. thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown, will be run Saturday.

By James Scully,  NBC Sports - (Baltimore) Orb drew the least favorable starting position in the Preakness, post No. 1, but he can overcome it, especially given the complexion of the nine-horse field. Five contestants – Goldencents, Govenor Charlie, Itsmyluckyday, Oxbow and Titletown Five – like to race on or within a few lengths of the lead and the field could stretch out early, allowing Orb plenty of room to run as he settles behind an expected legitimate pace. Indonesia's child jockeys brave danger for cash and glory

Child jockeys race their horses at a racetrack outside Bima, Indonesia, Nov. 17.

A gambler collects his money after a win on a horse race.

Dozens of child jockeys, some as young as eight-years-old take part in the races. Involving nearly 600 horses they take place around a dusty, oval track of 1,400 meters (nearly one mile). The reward for the winner is a handful of cash for his family and glory for the jockey. The grand prize is one million rupiah ($100). Those who win their groups get two cows. The chairman of the races' organizing team, Hajji Sukri, denies that there is any danger to the children saying they are all skilful riders and none have been killed or seriously hurt.

This is horrendous! These children are completely unprotected. Why have they been allowed to get away with not having any laws against using underage jockeys to run these horses? It is a travesty and graphically points out that this world has a long way to go with enacting child labor laws.

Union Rags pulls ahead at the last second to win The Belmont Stakes

    The Associated Press reports:

Union Rags nipped Paynter at the wire in a photo finish Saturday to win the Belmont Stakes, beating a field without Triple Crown hopeful I'll Have Another, who was retired with an injury the day before.

The finish was another thriller in the final leg of the Triple Crown, and trainer Bob Baffert was on the losing end each time.

Triple Crown Hopefull I'll Have Another gallops with exercise rider Jonny Garcia up during a morning workout at Belmont Park on June 7, 2012 in Elmont, New York.

From Reuters: NEW YORK - Triple Crown hopeful I'll Have Another, the favorite for Saturday's $1 million Belmont Stakes, has been scratched from the race, his trainer said on Friday.

Trainer Doug O'Neill said the colt, who was bidding to become the first horse in 34 years to complete the Triple Crown, suffered a tendon injury.

"Maybe he just strained himself from training," O'Neill told the Dan Patrick Show on the eve of the race. "Just a freakish thing. I'm bummed we're not participating. Whoever wins will be a special horse." Continue reading this story on NBC Sports.com here.

I'll Have Another, left, with jockey Mario Gutierrez aboard passes Bodemeister and jockey Mike E. Smith to win the 137th running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md., May 19.

I'll Have Another wins Preakness Stakes, sets sights on Belmont to try for Triple Crown

Two weeks ago, J. Paul Reddam's I'll Have Another ran down pacesetter Bodemeister to take the Kentucky Derby under the Twin Spires at Churchill Downs. On Saturday, I'll Have Another took on that pacesetting rival in the 137th running of the Preakness Stakes and gutted out a neck victory to take the second jewel of the Triple Crown at Pimlico.

The front-running Bodemeister took command straightaway and set more reasonable fractions of :23 3/5, :47 3/5, 1:11 3/5 and 1:36 3/5 this time around than what he did in the Derby. Jockey Mario Gutierrez settled I'll Have Another in behind and to the outside as Creative Cause kept pace with Bodemeister on the backstretch.

Bodemeister, Creative Cause and I'll Have Another swung around the turn in tandem, but the gray Creative Cause couldn't keep pace as his two rivals faced off yet again. Bodemeister held the advantage for much of the stretch run, but I'll Have Another kept inching closer and just got up in the shadow of the wire to finish 1 3/16 miles on the fast dirt in 1:55 4/5.
