Horses are left to die of starvation as the owners, who are tour guides, could not feed them due to lack of money in Nazlet Al-Saman, about 15 miles from Cairo, Egypt, February 8, 2011. The tourist business in Cairo and surrounding areas has suffered since the street protests against the regime of President Hosni Mubarak began two weeks ago, as tourists fled the country.

I have a hard time believing the owners would chose to let them starve to death, rather than just shoot them. We will update this post if we get more information.

This is absolutely terrible. If you cannot afford to properly take care of your animals you should not have them. At least have enough common sense or care for your animals to let them free in hopes they are able to find food on their own instead of slowly starving to death tied to a tree!

Canada geese and horses shared a snowy field on the Mill Ridge Farm in Lexington, Ky., on Feb. 7. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Kentucky as a cold front brought snow and frigid temperatures to the state.

This looks like traffic flow between the horses and geese. Who has the right of way?

Hay airlifted to hungry horses abandoned at a ranch in Montana

Here's a link to more about this story.

    Larry Mayer / AP

Hay flies through the air as Al and A.J. Blain, of Billings Flying Service, use a helicopter to haul hay to horses on the former Leachman Cattle Company ranch east of Billings on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011. The Billings Gazette reports that the Northern International Livestock Exposition had collected $10,000 in cash donations and about 250 tons of hay by Thursday. Five dead horses have been found on the ranch. A Montana veterinarian had warned that others would start dying off in droves if they did not receive food soon. The horses belong to James H. Leachman, who has filed for bankruptcy. Leachman is scheduled to appear Friday on multiple charges of animal cruelty.

They show somed young horses with the yellow leg bands that died from the circulation being cut off and there are more that will soon have the same fate if they do not get the leg bands off. It will cut the circulation off on them too. There is a blk/gray behind a Buckskin mare in the picture above  …

AFP reports: The little village of Klosters in the Swiss Alps that is better-known as the winter getaway of the British royals, is now also playing host to polo, the game traditionally played by kings. Except here, in temperatures plunging to -13 degrees, it is played with a twist, with horsemen mounted on ponies charging after the ball though snow rather than across a grassy pitch.

Extreme Polo. It's not for everyone and their pony. The eyes of The Steed in the first frame seem to be showing a "yea, right, ther crazy and my hooves are frozen" look.

Through the fire: Festival honors Saint Anthony, patron saint of animals

    By Elena Grothe

We've posted images from this annual event before on Photoblog. Here's a sampling from this year. What a ride.

According to tradition, people from the area ride their horses through the fire to purify the animals. Saint Anthony is the patron saint of animals.

If by "purify" they mean "burn all their hair off," then yes, this ceremony would seem to fulfill its purpose. That doesn't make it any more logical, but logic was definitely not the point here. It reminds me of Dave Barry's classic column about the Festival of St. Vincent in Manganeses de la Polvo …

An 'Aloitador' fighter tries to control a wild horse during the Rapa Das Bestas festival on Saturday, July 3 in Sabucedo, Spain. Wild horses are caught in the hills and taken down to the Corral of Sabucedo where they are sheared and tagged in the Rapa Das Bestas or 'Shearing of the Beasts'.

    Rapa Das Bestas

I often wonder if the people who participate in these kinds of festivals have previous experience with the animals. It looks like a pretty good way for man and beast to get hurt, even if one is familiar with horses. See more photos from the Rapa Das Bestas here.

The tradition seems to be ludicrous, and terrorizes the horses. Unless, they vaccinate the animals.
