A 17-year veteran of the Worcester Fire Department died early this morning while battling a house fire in Worcester, Mass., according to reports by the Worcester Telegram and Gazette.

Firefighter Jon Davies, a father of three, was killed and his partner, Brian Carroll, was trapped when the building collapsed on top of them.  Firefighter Carroll, a 14-year-veteran, was hospitalized after firefighters worked for over an hour to free him from the rubble.

At the time of the collapse, the firefighters were searching for someone reportedly trapped in the residence that was home to a dozen people in the Vernon Hill section of Worcester.

More details and video from the scene can be found at Telegram.com.

So far this year, 82 firefighters have died in the line of duty.
