Two killed, homes destroyed in huge Indianapolis explosion

Matt Kryger / The Indianapolis Star via AP

Firefighters work the scene where an explosion has killed two people and damaged more than a dozen homes in the Richmond Hill subdivision, late Saturday, Nov. 10, in Indianapolis, Ind.

"Multiple houses engulfed in flames. Even the police officers that got to the scene before I did were not sure what happened. Kind of a surreal scene, even for police officers," Marion County Sheriff John Layton told the station.

The cause of the explosion and fires wasn't immediately clear, but Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard dismissed reports of a possible plane crash as he arrived at the scene. Fire officials said separately that investigators would be checking whether natural gas was possibly involved but they had no further details on what was behind the blast that sent tall flames skyward.

At least six people were confirmed dead in two southern Indiana counties, and there were reports of three other possible tornado-related deaths, including one in the town of Henryville, where television images showed homes blown apart.

Major Chuck Adams of the Clark County Sheriff's office said there was extensive damage to a school in Henryville, but added: "All the children are out. No injuries to any of them, just minor scrapes and abrasions."

Storm warnings were issued from the Midwest to the Southeast. Schools, government offices and businesses closed ahead of the storms, which came after a series of tornadoes earlier in the week killed 13 people in Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Tennessee.

    AP reports:

Christian Watford's buzzer-beating shot Saturday night put Indiana right back on the basketball map.

He never even got to see whether the buzzer-beating 3-pointer counted.

With students pouring onto the court and officials scrambling to reach the scorer's table for a replay review, Watford's teammates and Indiana's fans didn't even bother waiting for the call. They already knew Indiana's 73-72 upset of No. 1 Kentucky would hold up.

"I thought it was good, so I would have been like stunned if it wasn't," said coach Tom Crean, who stood next to the officials, pressed up against the table. "And I have no idea how we would have got that game finished if it wasn't."

Smoke billows from Momper Insulation in Fort Wayne, Ind., Oct. 30, 2011. Police evacuated area residents about 1 p.m. A passing motorist called in the fire on the city's west side at about 11:30 a.m., and three hours later the blaze remained out of control, Fire Chief Pete Kelly said. Firefighters were expected to remain on the scene Sunday evening and possibly overnight, he said.

Large fire breaks out at insulation company in Fort Wayne, Ind.

    WANE.com reports

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Fire officials said they are concerned about chemical exposure from the business in the area and are advising motorists to avoid it.

“The only suggestions I can give to people out there is if there is concern, stay in your house and shut the windows. I don’t want to alarm anyone, but there’s no point in going outside in this plume until we have some more information from our hazardous material team that’s in action right now,” said Fire Chief Pete Kelly. Learning a new computer program was both frustrating and fun for first-grader Kylea Devoy in Robyn Wells' New Harmony School class in New Harmony, Ind. on Oct. 27, 2011.

Learning new technology includes a little frustration for Indiana first-grader

    By Robert Hood

New Harmony School is located in extreme southwestern Indiana. The school is one of the few remaining Kindergarten through Grade 12 schools in the state. The school, with an enrollment of less than 200, is in one of the smallest school districts in Indiana. Officials say that that small class size allows for individualized education for each student.

However, The Evansville Courier & Press reported on Oct. 27 that New Harmony has found that its strength is also its weakness. The district expects state financial support to be reduced by about one-third next year because funding levels are based on enrollment.

The district, which has long prided itself on being independent, is now considering options that include raising property taxes, reopening as a charter school, or even merging with another school district. Read more…
