Rick Santorum gets used to a little more attention

By David R Arnott, NBC News

For a long time, Rick Santorum's campaign seemed to be going nowhere. There was even an occasion when just one person showed up to one of his campaign events, according to The New York Times.

How times can change. Now that he is running higher in the polls, he can't even sit in his car without being buzzed by the media. And on Monday evening, he was bestowed with the somewhat tarnished honor of a tweeted endorsement from Rupert Murdoch.

Will Santorum's star burn ever brighter, or will it fizzle out like those of several candidates before him? Stay tuned to NBC Politics in the days to come.

Inside Iowa: Voters describe what they want in a candidate

    By Evan Vucci, Associated Press

There's nothing quite like the political spectacle that gets put on here in Iowa every four years. You spend endless hours driving to small town coffee shops, firehouses, and American Legion halls chasing the candidates that are vying for the Presidency.

    Evan Vucci / AP

Republican presidential candidate, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, accompanied by his wife Callista, makes remarks during a campaign stop in Independence, Iowa, Monday, Jan. 2.

There is a saying that "You can't fake Iowa." Iowans expect politicians to get out and meet them face to face, shake hands, and answer questions. The best moments covering campaigns happen when the façade of the campaign breaks down, and real interactions take place. I was curious about what Iowans are looking for in a year when one candidate hasn't broken away from the pack. Watch the video below to see what I found. (Follow Evan Vucci on Twitter)

Gingrich becomes tearful speaking about his mother

    Andrew Burton / Getty Images

Republican presidential candidate and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich wipes away a tear while speaking about his deceased mother during a question and answer forum put together by Moms Matter 2012 at Java Joe's, a coffee shop, on Dec. 30, 2011 in Des Moines, Iowa. The GOP presidential contenders are crisscrossing Iowa in the final stretch of campaigning in the state before the January 3rd caucus, the first test the candidates must face before becoming the Republican presidential nominee.

    By Rich Shulman

This moment on the campaign trail today reminds a bit of the famous "my mother was a saint" line Richard Nixon uttered in his farewell speech to his staff after resigning the presidency. Newt Gingrich, like Nixon, is known for his hard-nosed political style.

Watch the video below and let us know (via the poll) if you think Gingrich is really being sincere.

Romney looks more confident in Iowa vote run-up

    Charlie Riedel / AP

Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney speaks during a campaign stop at the Music Man Square in Mason City, Iowa Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011.

    By Rich Shulman

There seems to be general consensus among political reporters that the Mitt Romney campaign is the best financed and the most organized in the Republican field. So you would think his staff could come up with something better than a shaky chair for the candidate to stand on.

Michelle Bachmann, on the other hand, can be expected to do the unexpected.

Republican presidential candidate U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) dances with 9-year old Shayne Holmes before a "meet and greet" campaign event December 29, 2011 in Marshalltown, Iowa. Earlier in the day, Bachmann charged that the campaign of U.S. Rep. Ron Paul had offered money to one of her key Iowa supporters, Kent Sorenson. "Kent Sorenson personally told me he was offered a large sum of money to go to work for the Paul campaign," Bachmann said in a statement.

Supporters of presidential hopeful U.S. Rep Ron Paul (R-TX) attempt to block Occupy Wall Street protesters who are disrupting a campaign event at the Iowa State Fairgrounds on Dec. 28, 2011 in Des Moines, Iowa. With less than one week to go before the Iowa caucuses, Ron Paul is trying to maintain his lead as he campaigns through Iowa.

WHO-TV reports:  About 150 protesters occupied Romney's campaign offices on Ingersoll near 29th Street late Wednesday afternoon.

Seven people were arrested for criminal trespassing. The rest of the protesters then made their way to Wells Fargo Bank down the street, where three people were arrested.

The group says it’s protesting a $62,000 donation made by the bank to the Romney campaign.

But he also turned his camera around to examine the faces of the audience. It's the views of people like these that will matter the most when the Iowa caucus is held on January 3.

Corey Mcintosh harvests what's left of his uncle's corn field on the Missouri River bottom west of Loveland, Iowa. Corey's uncle, Lyle Mcintosh, said the field was 80 acres big before the Missouri River flood covered the field for 2.5 months. Afterwards, there was only 3.5 ares of standing corn left. The field produced 87 bushels per acre instead of a decent year's average of 200 bushels per acre.

Iowa corn farmers struggle to mend flood-scarred fields

    By Rich Shulman

Forunately, the Missouri River bottom land represents a tiny portion of farmland in Iowa and Nebraska.

    The Omaha World-Herald reports:

The once-raging Missouri River has calmed, but the flood fight continues for Nebraska and Iowa farmers who work the rich bottom ground along its banks.

In many places, the churning water left behind ravines, gullies and drifts of sand several feet deep.

Many affected farmers quickly finished their scanty harvests and turned their attention to mending their scarred land.
