Tears, gunfire at Palestinian militants' funerals as Israel-Gaza truce takes hold

    Suhaib Salem / Reuters

Palestinians carry the body of Islamic Jihad militant Bassam al-Ejla during his funeral in Gaza City on March 13, 2012.

Reuters reports from Gaza — An Egyptian-brokered truce between Israel and militant groups in the Gaza Strip began to take hold on Tuesday after four days of violence in which 25 Palestinians were killed and 200 rockets were fired at Israel.

The number of Palestinian rocket attacks dropped steeply after the ceasefire went into effect overnight. The Israeli military said three rockets had hit, causing no casualties, and that there had been no Israeli air strikes in the Gaza Strip.

Previous ceasefire deals after earlier rounds of fighting have often got off to a slow start, with guns falling silent within a day or two. Read more.

'Militant' is not a strong enough word. We should be calling them what they are - terrorists.

The parents of a Palestinian militant mourn next to his body at the scene of an Israeli air strike in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip on March 12, 2012.

Msnbc.com news services report — Israeli air strikes killed two Palestinian militants and a civilian in the Gaza Strip on Monday in a fourth day of cross-border hostilities, medical sources said.

An Islamic Jihad gunman was killed while launching a rocket from south Gaza, the group said. Another died and three others were hurt when their motorized rickshaw was hit.

Hamas and hospital officials said a 15-year-old schoolboy was killed in a separate air strike on Monday. The teenager, Nayef Qarmut, was killed while walking to school past an open area, emergency services spokesperson Adham Abu Selmiya told Agence France Presse. At least 28 other Palestinian civilians were wounded in the various incidents.

Palestinian attacks have disrupted normal life in southern Israel, forcing many schools to close on Sunday and Monday. Israeli aircraft have flown over Gaza since Friday, killing at least 21 people, including two civilians. Read the full story.

Rockets fired from Gaza strike deep inside Israel

Palestinian rockets struck two cities deep in Israel on Wednesday. Islamic Jihad, a smaller Gaza faction and occasional Hamas ally, claimed responsibility for the attacks on Beersheba and Ashdod that followed a surge of shelling between Israel and Hamas that killed four Palestinian civilians and five militants on Tuesday.

Israelis run to take cover in a shelter during a Palestinian rocket attack on the southern Israeli city of Beersheba on March 23. Two Grad rockets fired by Gaza militants slammed into Beersheva, a day after two deadly Israeli raids killed nine Gazans.

Islamic Jihad said it fired Grad rockets, assembly-line weapons more sophisticated than some shorter-range projectiles Palestinian militants have used in the past, at Beersheba and Ashdod, 20 miles and 25 miles from Gaza respectively.
