Jazz lovers and cultural officials in Philadelphia are promoting a fundraising effort to save the run-down John Coltrane House.

Preserving the national historic landmark is part of a broader mission to reclaim the city's jazz heritage and celebrate the current music scene.

Coltrane is a saxophonist best known for his recording "A Love Supreme." He lived in a rowhouse in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood from 1952 to 1958.

The first North Sea Jazz Festival took place in 1976 in the Nederlands Congresgebouw in The Hague. It started with six venues, 300 artists and about 9,000 visitors. Legends of jazz like Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie performed that first year.

The festival moved to its current, bigger location in Rotterdam in 2006. More than 1,000 musicians are expected to play on 13 different stages this year, and more than 65,000 concert goers are expected to attend.

Robert, a very cool bit-o-music history. But having been to festivals nearly as big, with so many stages and acts, it can become difficult to choose which act you really want to see, when the two, or three you most wanted to see go onstage at the same time.

The Utah Jazz is silenced and sent packing

    By Robert Hood

The Utah Jazz won their final game of the regular season Wednesday night against the Denver Nuggets, but that wasn’t enough to make up for a rough season.

Utah Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko carries a box of personal belongings as he leaves the team's locker room, April 14, 2011, in Salt Lake City. The Jazz did not qualify for the NBA playoffs, and the players cleaned out their lockers at the end of regular season.

    Jim Urquhart / AP

Jazz head coach Tyrone Corbin talks to the media in the team's locker room on April 14, 2011 in Salt Lake City.

    AP’s Lynn Debruin reports:
The Jazz players stayed on the floor after Wednesday's game to thank the fans for their support despite the woeful season, which saw Utah become the only team in NBA history to start 15-5 and 27-13 and not make the playoffs.

The Jazz finished 39-43, with Wednesday's win giving them a 21-20 home mark. It is the first time in six years that they won't be in the playoffs, but the sudden resignation of Hall of Fame coach Jerry Sloan, injuries and trade of All-Star point guard Deron Willams had something to do with that.
