Syrian rebels celebrate on top of the remains of a Syrian government fighter jet which was shot down at Daret Ezza, on the border between the provinces of Idlib and Aleppo, on Nov. 28. Syrian rebels captured a pilot manning the fighter jet downed over Daret Ezza in the northern province of Aleppo, witnesses told an AFP reporter in the town.
Reuters -- Underlining the growing military muscle of the rebels, bolstered by weapons captured during raids on army facilities as well as supplies from abroad, fighters shot down a war plane in the northern province of Aleppo on Wednesday using an anti-aircraft missile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
Opposition group subsequently posted a video clip on the Internet that showed a man in a green jumpsuit being carried through fields. He was bleeding heavily from his head and appeared unconscious; "This is the pilot that attacked the houses of civilians," said a voice off camera. Read the full story.

Reuters journalist Hadeel Al Shalchi saw the jet make at least a dozen rounds of the village of a few thousand people, 35km north of Aleppo city, firing missiles and mounted machine guns.
Three rebel fighters fruitlessly fired an old anti-aircraft gun and a rifle at the speeding plane.
Villagers panicked - some tried to escape on motorbikes while other crammed belongings and bread into three-wheeled vans. They were unsure of where was safe to go. Read the full story.

A Pakistani airliner crashed just short of landing in Islamabad on Friday, killing all 127 people aboard, the country's Civil Aviation Authority told NBC on Friday.
The flight data recorder has been located, NBC’s Fakhar Rehman reported from Islamabad, and the so-called "black box" was expected to reveal why the plane went down. But the apparent cause was that pilots were flying low under heavy clouds and hit high-tension wires as they approached Benazir Bhutto International Airport, he said.

The jetliner of former Bulgarian dictator Todor Zhivkov is prepared to be submerged and turned into an underwater tourist attraction off the country's Black Sea coast in Varna on May 25, 2011. The body of the Tupolev 154 will become an artificial reef aimed at attracting scuba divers. The plane, built in 1971, was stripped of its cables and engines before being sunk at a depth of about 70 feet.
I flew on a Tu 154 during a reporting trip to Siberia in 1998. It was cramped and dark inside, but the plane was fast and sturdy. It felt a little like a Boeing 727.
The Tu 154 was designed and built by Tupelev in the mid-1960s as a medium-range airliner. It became the backbone of Soviet and Russian airlines for several decades. The jet serviced over a sixth of the world's landmass and carried about half of all passengers flown by Aeroflot. It remained the standard domestic airliner of Russia and former Soviet states until the mid-2000s.
The Tu 154 was one of the fastest civilian aircraft in operation and had a range of 3,280 miles. It was capable of operating on gravel airfields, and was widely used in the extreme Arctic conditions where other jets were unable to operate.

A Delta Airlines plane shows damage after running into a flock of large birds twenty miles from Little Rock International Airport on Friday, April 1.
Airport spokeswoman T.J. Williams said Flight 5087 was headed to Little Rock from Atlanta when pilots reported the bird strike at 3:38 p.m. Friday, about 20 miles southeast of the airport. Williamssays pilots were able to land without incident and no one on board was hurt. She says passengers have left the plane. Williams didn't know if any of them were making connecting flights.

Williams says Delta officials plan to examine the plane and decide if anything needs to be done. She says officials don't know what kind of birds were hit. Even though the incident didn't occur at the airport, officials use cannons to frighten away birds.
