Five killed in militant attack on police camp in Kashmir

Indian policemen take cover during a gunbattle in Srinagar, the capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir, on March 13, 2013. A team of militants stormed a paramilitary camp Wednesday morning, leaving five soldiers and two militants dead, a police official said.

Indian policemen and paramilitary soldiers react during a gunbattle in Srinagar on March 13, 2013.

Reuters reports — Two militants hiding automatic rifles and grenades in cricket equipment opened fire on a paramilitary camp on the Indian side of Kashmir on Wednesday, killing five Indian personnel and wounding five, police said.

The militants were killed in a gunfight at the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) base just outside the restive city of Srinagar, which has been under curfew for much of the last few weeks following protests and clashes with police.

Local media reports said that Hizbul Mujahideen, the bitterly disputed region's largest militant group, had claimed responsibility for the attack, in which three civilians were also wounded.

Police said the gunmen approached the camp by mingling with children playing cricket in a nearby field, hiding their weapons in the cricket gear they were carrying. Once at the camp, they shot a sentry dead and then fired indiscriminately into the base. Read the full story.

Snow falls in Kashmir; avalanche on Siachen Glacier kills six, one missing

An aerial view of the snow-covered Bhadarwah valley is seen about 205 km from Jammu, the winter capital of Kashmir, India, on Dec. 16. Six Indian Army soldiers were killed and one is missing in an avalanche that struck the Siachen Glacier on Dec. 16, in Sub-sector Hanief of the glacier when troops were moving between posts at 19,000 feet. A rescue operation is underway to trace the missing soldier. A medium danger avalanche warning was issued for the area close to the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir and Banihal town on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway as one-way traffic was restored on the arterial road connecting the valley with rest of the country.

A Kashmiri farmer picks saffron flowers in a farm on Monday, Nov. 05, 2012 in Pampore, in Indian administered Kashmir. Production of the precious spice is falling rapidly in the region. Farmers have become concerned at the falling yield of the saffron crop year after year with the changing climatic conditions responsible for a 50 to 60 percent decrease in the yield for the last two decades. Approximately 5,000 flowers are required to provide enough threads to make an ounce. Saffron is a precious spice because of the vast acreage involved in addition to the labor-intensive handpicking of the flowers and extracting of the tiny threads.
