Orb grazes under the watchful eyes of exercise rider Jennifer Patterson (2nd R) and trainer Shug McGaughey (R) after an early morning workout in preparation for the upcoming 138th running of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, on May 17. The Preakness Stakes, the second leg of U.S. thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown, will be run Saturday.

By James Scully,  NBC Sports - (Baltimore) Orb drew the least favorable starting position in the Preakness, post No. 1, but he can overcome it, especially given the complexion of the nine-horse field. Five contestants – Goldencents, Govenor Charlie, Itsmyluckyday, Oxbow and Titletown Five – like to race on or within a few lengths of the lead and the field could stretch out early, allowing Orb plenty of room to run as he settles behind an expected legitimate pace. The Kentucky Oaks, sometimes called the little sister of the Kentucky Derby, is held at Churchill Downs on the Friday before the Kentucky Derby in Louisville, Ky. It features 3-year-old Thoroughbred fillies, and the race is 1 1/8 miles long. The Oaks and the Derby are the oldest continuously contested sporting events in history and are the only horse races that continue to be held in their original venue.

kittygirl23, thanks for your comment. I double-checked the information and you are correct. I blame my failing eyes. The type on the website is tiny. :( To you point, that's not a good reason. I regret the error.

Animal Kingdom wins 137th running of Kentucky Derby

By Katie Cannon, Senior Multimedia Editor

Even if a person isn't a big horse racing fan, attending the Kentucky Derby is something that should be on everyone's 'bucket list'. Derby, as native Kentuckians call it, boasts a venue that is goose bump raising, and when those lovely animals walk onto the track supported by ankles not much bigger around than a wrist to 'My Old Kentucky Home', keeping a dry eye is a difficult thing to do. There is nothing like it. Congratulations to Animal Kingdom and all of his connections!

Enjoyed watching the Derby. Was lucky enough to attend it nearly 50 years ago. Have had pleasure horses during my life. Know that horse racing is a job and a big money making venture for many people. However, horses bones are not well formed and strong until the animal is 5 years old.
