Zoo officials examine a dead camel after it was attacked by an African lion at the zoo on Jan. 31, 2012.
Oni, an African lion, escaped from his cage at an Indonesian zoo and then attacked and killed a camel before he was subdued and anesthetized, according to local reports monitored by Reuters.
ITN reports that the camel killed in the incident was a two-year-old male called Thomas, while another female camel survived.
It took 90 minutes for zoo officials to capture the lion and shoot him with a tranquilizer dart inside the camel's enclosure.
The zoo keeper is thought to have forgotten to lock Oni's cage after cleaning and feeding the lion. Indonesian website VIVAnews reports that the errant keeper was given the day off to calm down.

Lions, Binta, left, and Chalid are seen in their enclosure of Hanover Zoo in Hanover, Germany, on Nov. 5.
A coworker and I cracked up when we saw this picture, thinking that the lioness looks as though she is nagging her downtrodden "husband" who is trying to tune her out. Do you think the same, or are we bringing our own, um, "baggage," for lack of a better term, to the picture? It's always interesting to hear what thoughts or feelings others take from an image, based on personal history that they may either consciously on subconsciously apply to the viewing experience.

Kevin Richardson, a.k.a. the Lion Whisperer lays with two of his lions in their enclosure at the Kingdom of the White Lion Park in Broederstroom, near Johannesburg South Africa. A new film opening in the United States on Friday about a rare white lion who escapes becoming a trophy on a wall is a rare happy ending in a country where more than 1,000 lions are killed legally each year. Richardson, the man behind the movie, calls himself an "ambassador of lions" and hopes the film will prevent foreign tourists, who are willing to pay up to $40,000 to shoot a big cat, from coming to South Africa.
While I respect Richardson’s mission, I wonder about his methods.
