Two puppets, a man and his niece, will roam through the streets of Liverpool, northern England, and April 20-23 looking for each other during the Sea Odyssey festival. The free event, organized by the French company Royal de Luxe is one of a series of events marking the 100th anniversary of the sinking of The Titanic. The liner, registered in Liverpool, sank on its maiden voyage to New York on April 15, 1912.

The tragic tale is about a man who went down with the Titanic. His brother, the giant deep sea diver and uncle of the little giant girl, is on a 100-year quest to find his brother on the ocean floor and lay him to rest. Instead he finds a letter to his brother from his niece, that she wrote three days before the cruise liner hit an iceberg and sank. He vows to return it to the girl and tell her what happened to her father.

The two are reunited at the end of the 23-mile route.

Giant puppet embarks on Titanic-inspired odyssey

    Christopher Furlong / Getty Images

The 'Little Girl Giant' marionette makes her way through the streets of Liverpool as the Titanic Sea Odyssey puppet spectacular gets underway on April 20, 2012 in Liverpool, England. Over the next three days French street theater company Royal De Luxe will be performing their Sea Odyssey with the giants coming to life telling a story inspired by the Titanic.

By David R Arnott, NBC News

A 30-foot puppet dubbed the 'Little Girl Giant' was carried through the streets of Liverpool on Friday to commemorate the sinking of the Titanic 100 years ago.

The BBC reported that the character was inspired by a letter written by a 10-year-old girl to her father, a steward on the Titanic who did not survive the disaster.

The three-day event will see the marionette making a journey around the English port city on a quest to learn her father's fate.

City official Joe Anderson said "The Titanic will always resonate with Liverpool, particularly as the name of the city was emblazoned on its stern and many of its crew were from the Merseyside area."

For two weeks only! Mosaic floor revealed

    Christopher Furlong / Getty Images

Council staff clean a section of the rarely seen Minton tiled floor at St. George's Hall on Jan. 4, 2012 in Liverpool, England. The exquisite floor which is usually covered for protection is in the process of being competeley unveiled to allow the public a glimpse of the 30,000 handmade mosaic tiles from Saturday, Jan. 7 to Sunday, Jan. 22. The Minton covering was layed in 1852, and depicts dolphins, tritons and sea nymphs reflecting Liverpool's seafaring heritage.

    By Phaedra Singelis, NBC News

     The Liverpool Daily Post reports:

The exquisite Minton Floor in St George’s Hall will be on public display for two weeks in January.

It is the first time in three years the mosaic has been uncovered and put on show to the public.

Consisting of 30,000 hand crafted rare tiles, the immaculately preserved surface depicts the city’s coat of arms, sea nymphs, boys on dolphins and other sea creatures.

The Minton floor tiles are usually concealed beneath wooden flooring which covers the Great Hall.

The mosaic was covered in the 1860s to provide a more hardwearing surface for dancing and has only been unveiled a handful of times since. Continue reading....

    According to the Liverpool government:

And for the first time in more than ten years, visitors who pre-book a tour will be given special shoe coverings and get the opportunity to walk across the floor.

Below are photos from the last time the floor was reveiled in 2009.  Approximately 25,000 people came to see it then.

If this floor is so beautiful... and from what I can tell it is, why don't they figure out a way to keep it on display permanently? Perhaps coving it with plexiglass or some other see-through material!

Guardian posts interview with photographer Paul Trevor about his 35-year-old pictures of Liverpool

    By Stokes Young, nbcnews.com

There are some very touching pictures in this collection, and I look forward to seeing what Trevor identifies in the interview below as "Part Two":

The whole exhibition is about childhood in Liverpool in the mid-70s. And it's only Part One because I'm hoping that people who identify themselves or recognize themselves or their friends or their relatives in the pictures get in touch, so I can do new photographs. And that will be Part Two.

Here's the video, via The Guardian, which has links to information about the exhibit and book.
