Rocky, Maine's largest lobster ever, has claws "tough enough to snap a man's arm"

Reuters: "All the weight is in the claws, it would break your arm," said Elaine Jones, education director for the state's Department of Marine Resources.

Maine State Aquarium Manager Aimee Hayden-Roderiques is pictured holding "Rocky", the 27-lb lobster donated by a shrimp dragger to the Aquarium in this handout photo obtained by Reuters February 23, 2012. The lobster, the largest ever recorded caught in Maine, was released into the ocean Thursday.

The 40-inch male crustacean, about the size of a 3-year-old human, was freed in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Buddhists liberate lobsters, at least for a short time

    Brian Snyder / Reuters

Buddhist monk Geshe Tenley laughs as his robes flap in the breeze on the bow of a boat during the release of lobsters back into the ocean on "Chokhor Duchen", or the anniversary of Buddha's turning of the Dharma Wheel, in the waters off Gloucester, Massachusetts, on Wednesday. The group of Buddhists released about 500 lobsters that were caught by commercial lobstermen, after buying the lobsters from a wholesaler who would otherwise have sold the crustaceans to restaurants.

    Reuters reports:

GLOUCESTER, Mass. — Instead of plunging headfirst to their death in a pot of boiling water, 534 live lobsters escaped the dinner plate and belly flopped to freedom into the dark waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

A group of Tibetan Buddhists flanked the sides of a whale-watching boat at dusk on Wednesday, sprayed the lobsters with blessed water, clipped the bands binding their dangerous claws and gently released them one by one into the deep water below. Continue reading.

In this photo taken on Dec. 2, Albert Carver looks at a 50-foot-tall Christmas tree made of lobster traps on Beals Island, Maine. Some of the top lobster-fishing ports in New England are claiming bragging rights about who has the biggest and best Christmas tree created from lobster traps. The groups that put up the trees say they draw attention to the ports' maritime heritage, bring people together and raise money for good causes. The tree in Beals Island helps raise money for the Beals-Jonesport Fourth of July festivities and one in Gloucester benefits a nonprofit devoted to the arts.

My Christmas tree is bigger than yours: New England lobster-fishing ports look for bragging rights

This tree would look even better surrounded by some of the 7plus inches of snow we have here.
