Residents of Alcala de Henares, a suburb of Madrid, Spain, react when their number is called as the 4-million-euro jackpot in the Spanish National Lottery on Dec. 22. The world's biggest lottery dished out prizes worth 2.5 billion euros (3.4 billion dollars).

Winning in 2012 was particularly sweet, not just because Spain is suffering its second recession in three years and one in four of the workforce is jobless, but also because 2012 is the last year winners will pay no tax on their takings.

Spain's centre-right government, which has introduced austerity measures this year to shrink its public deficit, ruled that from next year those who win over 2,500 euros will pay 20 percent to the state.

Now that is an impressive amount of money to win in a lottery! Good for them, not having to pay taxes! However, if I were the winners, I would make sure to go some place safe, so they don't become a target for criminals. And definitely hire some bodyguards:)

Hundreds of people waited for more than two hours in a line stretching around the block of Blue Bird liquor store in Hawthorne, Calif. to buy Mega Millions lottery tickets on March 29.

People stood in lines across America that lasted hours for the opportunity to buy their chance to win $540 million in Friday's Mega Millions Lottery.

Nobody matched all six numbers in Tuesday's regular draw, and the total jackpot has been growing since. With a $540 million total, the lump sum payment is estimated at $389.8 million, according to lottery officials. Winners can also take payments annually for 26 years.

The amount that could be won may still rise depending on how many tickets are actually sold.
