    Blazing saddles in Spanish festival for patron saint of animals

    On the eve of Saint Anthony's Day, hundreds ride their horses trough the narrow cobblestone streets of the small village of San Bartolome during the "Luminarias," a tradition that dates back 500 years and is meant to purify the animals with the smoke of the bonfires and protect them for the year to come.

    Man, every time I see something involving Spanish people and animals it seems like it involves incredible cruelty to the animal. That's just an observation, don't confuse it with racism. The riders are not nearly as brave as the horses.

    If by "purify" they mean "burn all their hair off," then yes, this ceremony would seem to fulfill its purpose. That doesn't make it any more logical, but logic was definitely not the point here. It reminds me of Dave Barry's classic column about the Festival of St. Vincent in Manganeses de la Polvo …
