Having our companions blessed is anything but silly to those of us who love them and understand, as God's creatures, they are spirits living in bodies. Here in the U.S. these rites are performed on or around the Feast of Saint Francis.

Reuters -- Jenifer Martinez of Spain, along with her boyfriend Jorge Sanchez of Colombia and their three children, were packing their belongings before they were supposed to be evicted from their home in Madrid. However, their eviction has been postponed to January 2013, due to their landlord's failure to pay the mortgage to a local bank. Their landlord has since run away to Ecuador.

Maybe the reason why the landlord failed to pay the mortgage is because the tenants ( whom this article is about ) failed to pay the rent ( which is what this article is about ). What choice does a landlord have but to evict tenants who don't pay the rent. This scenario happens on a daily basis arou …

Construction materials serve as playground in gypsy settlement

A boy plays on a slide made out of discarded construction material at the Romanian gypsy settlement of "El Gallinero", on the outskirts of Madrid, Spain, Nov. 24. More than 400 Romanian gypsies live in precarious conditions, without running water or sewage services, in "El Gallinero", just 9 miles away from Madrid's centre. The inhabitants live in ramshackle huts made out of cardboard and zinc in an area prone to flooding. They have no running water or sewer services. Their children play amidst garbage, copper cables and rats.

Reuters -- Fifty-four families have been living in the Spanish gypsy settlement of Puerta de Hierro, on the outskirts of Madrid, for over 50 years. Since the summer of 2010, the community on the banks of the Manzanares River has been subject to evictions on the grounds that the dwellings are illegal. Families, whose homes have been demolished, move in with relatives whose houses still remain while the debris keeps piling up around them as more demolitions take place.

Riot police and protesters clash, as Spanish miners march into Madrid

Miners and supporters march through the centre of Madrid, in protest against government austerity measures, July 11. Police fired rubber bullets at protesting miners on Wednesday, injuring several people, during a demonstration against slashes in coal subsidies aimed at trimming the budget deficit of the euro zone's fourth largest economy.

msnbc.com staff and news services -- MADRID -- Spain announced a 65 billion euro ($79.85 billion) austerity package that includes tax hikes and spending cuts on Wednesday, a day after it won approval from its euro partners for a huge bailout of the country's stricken banks.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy told parliament the country's future was at stake as Spain grapples with recession, a bloated deficit and investor wariness of its sovereign debt. He said the nearly $80 billion in savings will be achieved through 2015 by a hike in sales taxes and a series of spending cuts through 2015.

"We are living in a crucial moment which will determine our future and that of our families, that of our youth, of our welfare state," Rajoy said.

Night at the museum: Picasso's 'Guernica' undergoes robot health check

A technician looks at images on a screen as a camera moves across the painting.

Every night after Madrid's Reina Sofia museum shuts its doors, a giant robotic machine is dragged out to resume a painstaking examination of one of the world's most iconic paintings.

Pablo Picasso's masterpiece "Guernica" is getting a full health check as it marks its 75th anniversary.

The machine — dubbed 'Pablito' — is taking tens of thousands of microscopic shots of the 291-sq. foot painting to allow experts to penetrate the work like never before and see its real condition after a hectic life traveling the globe.

Going to church is going to the dogs in Spain

Photos by Susana Vera / Reuters

A dog rests on a church pew before mass at San Anton Church in Madrid on Jan. 17, 2012.

The Associated Press reports that dogs, cats, rabbits and even turtles, many dressed in their finest, trooped into churches across Spain on Tuesday in search of a blessing on Saint Anthony's Day. Pet owners lined up around the block of the Church of San Anton in central Madrid behind blue metal barriers to wait for a priest to sprinkle holy water on their animals.

"In the name of San Anton, receive this blessing," the priest, decked out in white robes, said as he blessed the animals presented to him in the doorway of the church.
