Texas firefighter dies after fall from stands at Rangers game

    By Rich Shulman

I'm a little uncomfortable publishing an image of someone falling to their death, but I think fans, architects and Major League Baseball executives need to be aware that this kind of accident isn't that rare. Modern stadiums need to be made safer.

Mariners star Ken Griffey Jr. gave my then five-year-old daughter a baseball at the old Kingdome, and I will always treasure that memory.

    As AP reported:

Shannon Stone's mother, Suzann Stone, told The Associated Press that her son and young Cooper had gone to the game in hopes of catching a ball in the stands. They even stopped on the way to Arlington to buy a new glove for the boy.

Related: Rangers star Josh Hamilton has to deal with the painful memory of the incident.

In this July 7, 2011 image taken from video and provided by MLB.com, Texas Rangers fan Shannon Stone tumbles over a railing after catching a ball tossed to him by Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton during a game between the Rangers and Oakland Athletics in Arlington, Texas. Stone, a 39-year-old firefighter from Brownwood, Texas, plunged 20 feet onto concrete below and died at a hospital a short time later, the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office said.

Workers lay out a tarp, Friday, July 8, 2011, on the area where firefighter Shannon Stone fell at the Texas Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Texas. Stone tumbled over a railing and plunged 20 feet onto concrete below while catching a ball Thursday night, and died at a hospital a short time later, the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office said.

A father died at a Texas Rangers baseball game after falling from the stands while trying to catch a ball tossed by one of the players. KXAS-TV's Kim Fischer reports. (Warning: This video contains footage that some may find disturbing.)

I'm a bit peeved by the attitude by this writer of "just make it safer by erecting glass walls or chain link fences or something"--it wasn't the stadium's fault, it was the fan's bad judgement that resulted in this sad tragic incident. Blaming the stadium just comes across as stupid.
