By Farid Hossain, The Associated Press

Thousands of mourners gathered Tuesday at the wreckage of a Bangladeshi garment factory building to offer prayers for the souls of the 1,127 people who died in the structure's collapse last month, the worst tragedy in the history of the global garment industry.

The Islamic prayer service was held a day after the army ended a nearly three-week, painstaking search for bodies among the rubble and turned control of the site over to the civilian government for cleanup.

A family member of a victim cries during a memorial for victims of the Rana Plaza building collapse last month, in Savar, near Bangladesh, on May 14, 2013.

Recovery workers got a shocking boost Friday when they pulled a 19-year-old seamstress alive from the wreckage. But most of their work entailed removing corpses that were so badly decomposed from the heat they could only be identified if their cellphones or work IDs were found with them. The last body was found Sunday night.

Soldiers in camouflage, police and firefighters in uniform stood solemnly in neat rows near relatives of the dead. Many of the rescue workers had pained expressions on their faces. Tears rolled down the cheeks of one soldier.

Egypt protester shot dead, remembered at site of violence in Cairo

    Virginie Nguyen Hoang / AP

Demonstrators hold candles in memory of protester Mohammed Qorany, on Feb. 2, at the spot where he died in clashes, near the presidential palace in Cairo, Egypt. Protesters and rights groups have accused police of using excessive force this past week during a wave of mass demonstrations in cities around the country called by opposition politicians, trying to wrest concessions from Morsi.

By Yasmine Saleh and Seham Eloraby, Reuters --

At least one protester was shot dead and dozens wounded on Friday when riot police clashed with demonstrators demanding the overthrow of Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi.

Youths threw petrol bombs and shot fireworks at the outer wall of Mursi's Cairo presidential compound as night fell. Police responded by firing water cannon and teargas leading to skirmishes in the surrounding streets.

Two witnesses said they had seen a protester shot dead in Cairo with live ammunition in front of them.

"It's verified. I am at the morgue. He was shot with two bullets, and that's the report of the hospital. The shots were in the neck and the right side of the chest," said one of the witnesses, lawyer Ragia Omran. Medical and security sources confirmed Mohamed Hussein Qurany, 23, was killed with live bullets.

Many Americans remembered the victims of the Newtown, Connecticut, school massacre with a moment of silence on Friday, as a powerful U.S. gun rights lobbying group prepared to plunge into the national debate over gun control.

Tracy Connor / NBC News -- Twenty-six times the bells tolled Friday, punctuating a moment of silence that descended on Newtown, Conn., and many other communities across the country to mark one week since the horror at Sandy Hook Elementary school.

From white-steepled churches in the Georgia countryside to the majestic National Cathedral in Washington, the peals began at 9:30 a.m. -- the same time last Friday that gunman Adam Lanza began the rampage that tore a hole in the heart of America.

There was one ring for each of the 20 first-graders and six staff members killed by high-powered rifle fire -- and in some places, a 27th ring for Lanza's mother, who owned the guns her son used to kill her, the children and educators, and himself.

Martha Hernandez and six-year-old daughter Evlin mourn with Soledad Hernandez and her six-year-old daughter Betsy as they watch a live broadcast of the memorial service for Mexican-American singer and Spanish language television personality Jenni Rivera at Universal Studios in Los Angeles, Calif., on Dec. 19. The 43-year-old Long Beach, California native and six other people died on December 9 when her rented Learjet crashed shortly after takeoff from Monterrey, Mexico. A new compilation album of songs from her albums over the last seven years, "La Misma Gran Senora" or "The Same Great Lady", was to be released two days later.

Singer Jenni Rivera performs onstage during the 11th annual Latin GRAMMY Awards at the Mandalay Bay Events Center on Nov. 11, 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Reuters -- Thousands of mourners on Wednesday packed a Los Angeles theater to pay their final respects to Mexican-American singer Jenni Rivera more than a week after her death in a plane crash.

Rivera, 43, best known for her work in the Mexican folk Nortena and Banda genres, died after the small jet she was traveling in crashed in northern Mexico on December 9.

Rivera's family, dressed in white, led the memorial service eulogizing the singer. A bank of white roses was displayed in front of Rivera's bright red coffin and a brass band performed musical interludes.

More than 6,000 people crowded into the theater about 30 miles north of her childhood home in Long Beach, California. Tickets for the service at the Gibson Amphitheatre sold out within minutes, organizers said.

Thousands of family members, friends and general public gathered to remember the victims of the 2002 Kuta nightclub bombings which killed 202 people, including 88 Australians.

The Associated Press reports from Bali, Indonesia — A decade after twin bombs killed scores of tourists partying at two nightclubs on Indonesia's resort island of Bali, survivors and victims' families on Friday braved a fresh terrorism threat to remember those lost to the tragedy.

A woman grieves as she attends the memorial service.

The 2002 bombing was Asia's deadliest terror strike, killing 202 people — including 88 Australians and seven Americans — and injuring more than 240 others partying at the popular Sari Club and Paddy's Pub in Kuta that Saturday night. The attack was carried out by suicide bombers from the al-Qaida-linked group Jemaah Islamiyah and kick started a wave of violence that would hit an embassy, hotels and restaurants in the world's most-populous Muslim-majority nation.

Surgeon Fiona Wood, who led a team of Australian doctors that treated victims horribly burned in the attack, spoke of the survivors' bravery.

"A young woman whose injuries were beyond comprehension. The first thing she said when she came out of her coma was, 'I'll never run; will I walk again?'" Wood recalled. "I said, 'You will walk, you will run, you will race.' And in 2008, she beat me in an ironman." Read the full story.

The Memphis Fire Department has been honoring their fallen comrades during an annual memorial service for a long time, but after the events of Sept. 11, 2001 they now hold their remembrances on that historic date.

"We’ve always had a memorial for those fallen firefighters, who throughout the history of the department gave their lives in service to the city of Memphis," Lt. Wayne Cooke of the Memphis Fire Department told the Memphis Daily Mail. "After 9/11, we wanted to make sure we honored those who gave their lives in the line of duty on that day.
