Two dead after parking garage collapses at Miami college's campus

Rescue workers attend to a victim after a section of a parking garage under construction at a Miami-Dade College campus collapsed, on Oct. 10, in Doral, Fla., killing one worker and trapping at least two others in the rubble, officials said.

NBCMiami.com and NBC News staff --Police say a second body has been found in the rubble of a collapsed parking garage at Miami-Dade Community College's west campus in Doral, Fla.

Hours after the collapse at 11:40 a.m. on Wednesday, one person remained trapped in the rubble. Six crew members were with the person giving him oxygen and attending to his needs as others removed the heavy debris, said Capt. Louie Fernandez of Fire Rescue. Another person who had been trapped was rescued.

"The person cannot be moved. We literally have to lift and remove tons of debris around him," he said.

Some 300 rescuers rushed to the scene when a portion of the five-story parking garage at 3800 N.W. 115th Ave. collapsed in what authorities call a "pancake-style collapse." Police said it appeared that only construction workers were at the site.

Storm clouds form behind the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team during leg 7 of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12, from Miami to Lisbon, Portugal on May 20.

Calm seas belie storm ahead as sailors start leg 7 of Volvo Ocean race

    By Phaedra Singelis, NBC News

This photo makes the race look like a vacation. The weather was undeniably calm for the start of the Atlantic Ocean crossing, leg 7, of the 39,270-mile around-the-world race -- flat seas and southeast winds of 8 knots. Race officials are predicting it will take 11 days to complete this leg of the race. Tropical Storm Alberto, might give the crews a little more challenge in the days ahead.

Missing link? Orangutans at Miami zoo use iPad to communicate

    J Pat Carter / AP

A trainer uses an iPad as she works with an orangutan at Jungle Island in Miami. The devices are too fragile to actually hand over to the apes - the trainers must hold them.

    J Pat Carter / AP

Linda Jacobs says orangutans are extremely intelligent but limited by their physical inability to talk.

The Associated Press reports — The 8-year-old twins love their iPad. They draw, play games and expand their vocabulary. Their family's teenagers like the hand-held computer tablets, too, but the clan's elders show no interest.

The orangutans at Miami's Jungle Island apparently are just like people when it comes to technology. The park is one of several zoos experimenting with computers and apes, letting its six orangutans use an iPad to communicate and as part of a mental stimulus program. Linda Jacobs, who oversees the program, hopes the devices will eventually help bridge the gap between humans and the endangered apes.

"Our young ones pick up on it. They understand it. It's like, 'Oh, I get this,'" Jacobs said. "Our two older ones, they just are not interested. I think they just figure, 'I've gotten along just fine in this world without this communication-skill here and the iPad, and I don't need a computer.'"

Video: Baby orangutan steps out in Madrid

It's important to note that training the orangutans isn't done to entertain Jungle Island workers or guests. Because the animals are so intelligent, Jacobs said their minds must be kept active to prevent them from getting bored or depressed. The challenge is making the enrichment activities enjoyable.

"They need a lot of stimulation," Jacobs said. "Training isn't mandatory, but they love it." Read the full story.

The software was originally designed for humans with autism and the screen displays pictures of various objects. A trainer then names one of the objects, and the ape presses the corresponding button.

    J Pat Carter / AP

While Jenna Hogg, pictured, and other trainers have developed strong relationships with the orangutans, the iPad and other touchscreen computers offer an opportunity for them to communicate with people not trained in their sign language. Hundreds of protesters marched from Manhattan's Union Square, calling for justice in the killing of Trayvon Martin, 17, who was pursued and shot on Feb. 26 in Sanford, Florida by "neighborhood watch" member George Zimmerman, reportedly because the teenager's hoodie made him look suspicious.

Under Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law, Zimmerman has not been charged with a crime in the shooting.

A rally in Miami, closer to where the Sanford, Fla. shooting took place, was also held to show unity with Martin's family.

Photo Op: A grand piano, a yacht, a dolphin and a duck hang out at a sandbar in Miami bay

    By Carissa Ray

We caught wind of this story yesterday, but these images that AP photographer Alan Diaz and Getty Images photographer Joe Raedle captured today makes this story even a little more magical. Watch the video and check out the full story below.

Freelance photographer Karla Murray of New York photographs a grand piano that recently appeared on a sandbar in Biscayne Bay, Miami, on Jan. 26. Whoever put the piano there placed it at the highest point of the sandbar so that it?s not underwater during high tide.

    Joe Raedle / Getty Images

A grand piano is seen on a sandbar in Biscayne Bay on Jan. 26 in Miami, Florida. It is unknown how or why the heavy musical instrument was on the sandbar but some were speculating it was part of a music video production. The piano was charred from being burned.

A grand piano mysteriously shows up on a sandbar in Miami's Biscayne Bay and no one seems to know how it got there. TODAYshow.com's Dara Brown reports.

How do you think the piano came to rest on this sandbar? Read the full story here and share your theories in the comments below.

Unfortunately, there are no more keys on the piano in what appears to be fire damage. It was still great to see in person and the swim out and back again was nice. Posted some more pics from the swim on our facebook page.

Agostino Pezzatini and Luiz Menezes, at right, help push one of the pink snails in an art installation into place Thursday in Miami Beach, Florida. Some of the 45 snails have been beaten, battered, sprayed with graffiti, and thrown into Biscayne Bay since they were installed in mid-November by an international artistic collective Cracking Art Group and Italy's Galleria Ca d'Oro. Gloria Porcella, who owns Galleria Ca' d'Oro, which is sponsoring the snails, says that are periodically moved from one location to another, and that the snails have been on display in Rome and Paris without the levels of vandalism she's seen in Miami Beach. She hopes there'll be no more incidents before the public show ends on January 3.

Pink snails disrespected, attacked in Miami

    By Stokes Young, nbcnews.com

    More from the Miami Herald:

The 45 giant pink snails visiting Miami Beach for Art Basel season were supposed to inspire reflection on the environment and the fast pace of South Florida life.

Instead, the recycled plastic gastropods have been treated like unwanted tourists -- punched, tagged with graffiti, relocated by county order and, in one case, tossed into Biscayne Bay.

"Every morning I wake up with a disaster," said Gloria Porcella, co-owner of Galleria Ca' d'Oro, which has backed the Italian art collective behind the 45 snails' appearance. (full story)
