Braves clinch playoff spot with walk-off home run

    David Goldman / AP

Fans cheer as Atlanta Braves' Chipper Jones waves to the crowd after the Braves beat the Miami Marlins 4-3 in a baseball game to clinch at least a wild-card berth on Tuesday night.

AP reports: Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to put the Atlanta Braves back in the playoffs with a 4-3 victory over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night.

Freeman's dramatic drive off Mike Dunn clinched at least a National League wild-card berth for the Braves, who squandered a big lead in the wild-card race last year with a huge September collapse.

Longtime star Chipper Jones, who plans to retire at the end of the season, led off the ninth with a double. He moved to third on a wild pitch by Dunn (0-3) and scored when Freeman's 22nd homer easily cleared the center-field wall. "There was never any doubt," Jones said during the clubhouse celebration. "We knew that last year was somewhat of a fluke."  Read the full story.

NBC Sports reported in the HardballTalk blog:

Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen, minutes after he was suspended for five games, faced the media during a press conference April 10 to apologize for his recent comments about Fidel Castro in a magazine article. Guillen told Time magazine he loves Castro and respects the retired Cuban leader for staying in power so long. Protesters, including many Cuban-Americans, gathered outside Marlins Park during the press conference to demonstrate against Guillen, threatening to boycott the Marlins baseball team.
