Michigan beats Ohio State, ends 7-game skid

    Gregory Shamus / Getty Images

Denard Robinson of the Michigan Wolverines celebrates with students after beating Ohio State at Michigan Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011.

    AP reports:

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Denard Robinson accounted for five touchdowns, helping No. 17 Michigan beat Ohio State 40-34 on Saturday and snap a school-record, seven-game losing streak in the rivalry.

The Wolverines (10-2, 6-2 Big Ten) were forced to settle for a six-point lead with 1:59 left on Brendan Gibbons' career-long 43-yard field goal after two apparent TDs were negated by a video review and then penalties.

The Buckeyes (6-6, 3-5) had a chance to win the game on their final drive, but freshman Braxton Miller sailed a pass over Deviser Posey's head on what could've been a 76-yard TD and threw a loss-sealing interception to Courtney Avery.

Michigan finally beat its archrival because it had a better quarterback than Ohio State for a change.

Wow, that is one big aircraft carrier.

From AP: As long as the rain stays away from the Carrier Classic on the flight deck of the USS Carl Vinson on Friday afternoon, coaches Tom Izzo of Michigan State and Roy Williams of No. 1 North Carolina are confident their teams will put on a great Veterans Day show for the approximately 7,000 in the crowd, including the nation's basketball-fan-in-chief, President Barack Obama, plus a national TV audience.

Izzo and Williams said they and their players were blown away when they boarded the nuclear-powered carrier, which stretches 1,092 feet, weighs 95,000 tons and has four steam catapults that can accelerate a jet fighter from 0 to 165 mph in just more than two seconds.

Midnight Madness tips things off in Michigan

    AP reports:

Things were pretty normal for the opening night of practice for Division I men's basketball.

Most of Friday night's events were called some form of madness, from Big Blue to Mountaineer to First Night. Most of them ended well before the midnight part of many of their names.

There were also some coaches who let the fans know things were going to be serious this season.

Antique tractor auction expected to draw crowd as family sells off late father's unique collection

    Cory Morse / AP

Steve Mead, of Kent City, Mich., looks at tractors that belonged to the late Sherwood "Red" Casterline in Ensley, Mich. Arlene Culver beamed as she surveyed the farmyard lined with 72 antique tractors, old engines and other rusted farm equipment collected by her late father, Sherwood "Red" Casterline. On Saturday, hundreds of antique farm equipment buffs from as far away as Texas will gather for an auction to sell off the rare tractors and engines Culver's father dragged home one by one over 50 years of collecting.

Sherwood "Red" Casterline, right, died two years ago at age 92. His antique tractor collection goes on the auction block Saturday.

As the Grand Rapids Press reports:

For the parade of curiosity seekers and tractor buffs stopping by the farm at Algoma Avenue and 22 Mile Road, the collection offers a rare look into the world of farming whose time has passed.

There's the rare 1934 Plymouth tractor, one of about 200 made before Chrysler Corp. sued and forced the company to change its name to Silver King. There are four Silver Kings on the yard, too.

Street signs peeled due to the heat at the corner of Lewis Street and Delaware Avenue in the east side of Flint, Mich., Tuesday, June 21, where an abandoned house burned during a rash of 11 suspicious fires that occurred overnight that left Flint Firefighters needing to call in mutual aid from surrounding communities to help.

This is a fascinating way to show the impact of an arson fire.

Last night's fires are the latest of several outbreaks of arson in recent years in Flint.

As the Flint Journal reported, east side residents are glad to see the abandoned houses destroyed.

Sailor may be first U.S. service member killed by a Predator drone

NBC's Jim Miklaszewski says: A U.S. Marine reservist and a Navy corpsman were killed in a drone airstrike in Afghanistan last week in an apparent case of friendly fire, U.S. military officials tell NBC News.

Sailors salute as seaman Benjamin Rast's flagged-draped coffin is removed from the airplane at South Bend Regional Airport in South Bend, Ind. The military says Rast a 23-year-old Navy medic of Niles, Mich., died April 6 while on patrol in Afghanistan's Helmand province.

Marine Staff Sgt. Jeremy Smith and Navy Corpsman Benjamin Rast were reportedly killed Wednesday by a Hellfire missile fired from a U.S. Air Force Predator in what appears to be a case of mistaken identity, NBC reported. Smith and Rast were part of a Marine unit moving in to reinforce fellow Marines under heavy fire from enemy forces outside Sangin in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan.

Robert Rast salutes as his son's flagged-draped coffin is removed from the airplane at South Bend Regional Airport in South Bend, Ind.

The Marines under fire were watching streaming video of the battlefield being fed to them by an armed Predator overhead. They saw a number of "hot spots," or infrared images, moving in their direction. Apparently believing that those "hot spots" were the enemy, they called in a Hellfire missile strike from the Predator.

Members of the Patriot Guard escort the funeral procession for sailor Benjamin Rast from the South Bend Regional Airport in South Bend, Ind.

It's believed that this is the first time that U.S. service members have been killed by a Predator in a friendly fire incident.

Smith, 26, of Arlington, Texas, was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division out of Houston. Rast, 23, was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division out of San Diego.

Robert Franklin / South Bend Tribune via AP

Students from nearby St. Bavo Elementary School line the street outside Hahn Funeral home to show their respect Rast.

The U.S. military is investigating the incident. Military officials say the families of both service members have been informed of the possibility this was a friendly fire incident.

Robert Franklin / South Bend Tribune via AP

St. Bavo first grader and boy scout Nathan Watt salutes as the coffin carrying the body of sailor Benjamin Rast is transported inside Hahn Funeral home in Mishawaka.
