Midwesterners saw no signs of spring on Sunday as heavy snow blanketed a large swath of the country that stretched from Missouri to Pennsylvania.

The storm doused Colorado and northwest Kansas on Saturday, leaving 10 to 15 inches of snow in some areas, according to the National Weather Service. Now the system is moving east and will make its way through the mid-Mississippi Valley, the Ohio Valley and the Appalachians, where it is expected to leave six to 10 inches of snow in its wake.

Lloyd Anderson, 88, uses a snowblower with a canopy to clear his driveway on Lover's Lane in St. Joseph, Mo., on Feb. 26. A major winter storm paralyzed parts of the nation's midsection Tuesday, dumping a fresh layer of heavy, wet snow atop cities still choked with piles from the previous system and making travel perilous from the Oklahoma Panhandle to the Great Lakes.

Midwest works to dig out of heavy snow

“We have roofs collapsing all over town,” Woodward, Okla., Mayor Roscoe Hill Jr. told Reuters. “We really have a mess on our hands.”

The storm brought the February total in Wichita, Kan., to 21 inches, breaking a 100-year-old record for the month, NBC station KSN reported. A KSN reporter was covering the storm when a building collapsed under the weight of snow.

Cows are auctioned at the Fairview Sale Barn on August 2, 2012 in Fairview, Illinois.

Drought has forced many farmers in the Midwest to sell some or all of their sheep and cattle as they are faced with shortages of feed, water and healthy pasture land. Cattle at this auction were selling for about 25 percent less than they did in the spring when farmers were optimistic about this year's harvest.  Continue reading the full story.

The most severe drought in the state's history has taken a devastating toll on the state's cattle ranchers, and beef prices are expected to rise by as much as 10 percent over the next year. NBC's Janet Shamlian reports.

Worst drought in 50 years hits the Midwest

Photos by Scott Olson / Getty Images

Corn plants dry in a drought-stricken farm field on July 17, 2012 near Fritchton, Ind. The corn and soybean belt in the middle of the nation is experiencing one of the worst droughts in more than five decades.

Drought-damaged corn grows in a field on July 17, 2012 near Princeton, Ind. The state was the nation's fourth largest corn producer in 2011.

    Reuters reports:

Broiling heat blanketed much of the Midwest again on Tuesday, exacerbating the region's worst drought in more than 50 years and devastating corn, soy and other vital crops.

Across the country's agricultural heartland, elected officials met with farmers and ranchers affected by the growing disaster promising government relief.

Lightning strikes over drought stricken Midwest

    Adrees Latif / Reuters

Lightning strikes over a barn surrounded by a soybean crop in Donnellson, Iowa, July 13, 2012.

msnbc.com's Miguel Llanos reports: 61 percent of the contiguous U.S. was listed in drought, up from 56 percent last week, according to the National Weather Service's Drought Monitor.

"Anytime we have a drought maturing in mid-summer, the chances for rapid intensification will be there," Gary McManus, Oklahoma's associate state climatologist, told msnbc.com. "Even normal heat and dry conditions can speed that drought along." More than 1,000 counties in 26 states were named natural-disaster areas on Thursday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The move gives that designation to any county in severe drought for eight consecutive weeks, speeding up low-cost loan assistance to farmers. Continue reading the full story.

    Tornadoes rake Midwest

Steven Hausler / The Hays Daily News via AP

A funnel cloud dips down from the clouds on Saturday, April 14, just southwest of Otis, Kan., as severe thunderstorms roll across the state. The funnel touched down briefly before the storm weakened. Supercell thunderstorms spawned numerous tornadoes in Kansas on Saturday.

Dozens of tornadoes were reported Saturday as baseball-size hail shattered windows and tore the siding off homes in northeast Nebraska and one twister damaged a hospital in Creston, Iowa.

Forecasters had warned of "life-threatening" storms in the nation's midsection. No serious injuries from Saturday were immediately reported.
