Unlost Cause: Hope for football at South High

    By Jason Gonzalez, Star Tribune

Lenny Sedlock's face shows the battle wounds of 13 years as football coach at Minneapolis South High School. Deep furrows under his prominent brow and lines under his blue eyes.

    Jerry Holt / Star Tribune

South High football players Anthony Hockett left and Jaylin Bynum and their team listen to half time instruction from their coach. South was down 28-0 to Eden Prairie on Sept. 28 at the half, and lost the game 42-0.

The 52-year-old's stubby, bitten fingernails and cracking voice hint of the daily struggles at the most populated city school, which sits near Lake Street and Cedar Avenue in the heart of one of the Twin Cities' most challenged neighborhoods.

    Jerry Holt / Star Tribune

Members of the South High school football team take the field Friday, Oct. 12, 2012 to face Edison High in the first ever game played under the lights at South High in Minneapolis.

South, one of the state's oldest high schools, boasts a 91 percent graduation rate and attracts students with its high academic standards. It has fielded top teams in boys' soccer and girls' basketball.

Football is a different story. Full story

    Jerry Holt / Star Tribune

South High school football coach Lenny Sedlock celebrates after his team beat Edison on Oct. 12, 2012 in the first night game ever played at the school in Minneapolis.

This inspirational story was brought to our attention by Star Tribune Multimedia Producer McKenna Ewen, who shot the accompanying video.  The team at the Star Tribune went the extra mile on this one, taking us into the lives of the players and showing us how a coach's concern for the welfare of his players off the field affects the success of their team. You can watch the trailer for the video, below, but I recommend you watch the full video here.

Moviegoers (and their pets) flock to Internet cat video film festival

Leroy Bergstrom of Maple Plain, Minn. arrives with his cat Maestro before the Walker Art Center's first "Internet Cat Video Film Festival," showcasing the best of cat films on the Internet in Minneapolis on August 30, 2012.

    Craig Lassig / AP

The Associated Press reports — The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis tested the boundaries of legitimate art Thursday with a film festival devoted to the online cat videos that pervade YouTube and social networks.

Organizers said they wanted to find out whether the private experience of viewing the videos online would translate to a shared and social experience when shown on an outdoor screen on the museum's grounds.

The festival made room for various kinds of cat videos, with categories for comedy, drama, foreign, animated, musical, art-house and documentary. Participants voted on a "People's Choice" award, and several "lifetime achievements" were handed out to a few of the all-time popular videos. Read the full story.

Occupy Wall Street protest spreads to Minneapolis

Deathandtaxesmag.com reported on Friday that there is a big difference between the Occupy movement in New York and the one in Minneapolis. In Minneapolis the mayor supports the cause.

    Genevieve Ross / AP

Protesters gather at the Hennepin County Government Plaza on Oct. 7, 2011, in Minneapolis. The demonstration is in support of the Occupy protests that began on Wall Street in New York City.

    Genevieve Ross / AP

Kathryn Fink, 24, a student at Minneapolis Community and Technical College, participates along with other protesters during a demonstration at Hennepin County Government Plaza, on Oct. 7, 2011, in Minneapolis.

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak says in his blog that he is sympathetic with the demonstrators.

“While middle-class and working families are still struggling to recover (when they’re not still falling behind), those at the very top are concentrating their wealth in ways that are nothing short of alarming for our economy, our society and our democracy.

We aren’t going to solve all the issues of the global economy in Minneapolis, but we have to do what we can to close the gaps and level the playing field.”

The collapsed roof of the Metrodome can be seen with the skyline behind in Minneapolis Sunday, Dec. 12, above, and the roof is pictured prior to its deflation on Sept. 9, 2007, below. The inflatable roof of the Metrodome collapsed Sunday after a snowstorm that dumped 17 inches on Minneapolis. No one was hurt, but the roof failure sent the NFL scrambling to find a new venue for the Vikings' game against the New York Giants.
