Auto bailout still dominates crucial battle for Ohio

Emmanuel Dunand / AFP - Getty Images

Supporters listen to Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney during a rally at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Marion, Ohio on October 28, 2012.

Michael O'Brien of NBC News reports that auto industry politics is dominating the closing days of the campaign in the all-important battleground state of Ohio:

The Romney campaign circulated on Sunday several newspaper endorsements — the Des Moines Register and the Cincinnati Enquirer among them — to argue that the Republican ticket had made inroads in crucial swing states. The Obama campaign responded in kind by sending reporters endorsement editorials from the Youngstown Vindicator and the Toledo Blade, both of which referenced the 2009 auto industry bailout as a point in Obama's favor.

The auto bailout — which Romney had opposed, memorably, in a New York Times op-ed entitled "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt" — has assumed a central role in the closing days of the campaign, especially as the election plays out largely on a Midwestern, industrial and economically-battered playing field. Read the full story.

Vice Chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Carly Fiorina; Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne; New York Times columnist David Brooks; MSNBC's Rachel Maddow; and NBC's Chuck Todd discuss the importance of Ohio in this presidential election.

From tramping through cornfields to munching ice cream cones to holding babies – the time-honored traditions of the campaign trail leave President Barack Obama and GOP challenger Mitt Romney looking surprisingly alike.

I hope these people remember who said...let them go bankrupt and the one who bet on American workers. Pres. Obama stood up for them and took a lot of heat even from his own party and gave the auto workers the bailout they needed.

President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney took a break from their often rancorous campaigns to poke fun at each other and themselves at the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Dinner in New York, Thursday night.

Romney told the formal white tie and gown crowd that, "it's nice to finally relax and wear what Anne and I wear around the house."

Through much of the evening, the two candidates sat just one chair down from each other. Only host Cardinal Timothy Dolan separated them, the Associated Press reported.

Romney told the crowd, "I was actually hoping the president would bring Joe Biden along this evening, because he'll laugh at anything." Read the full story.

Just got done watching both clips. I give Obama a lot of credit for embracing the evening and making more fun of himself than of Romney. I think that is the jest of this event. Romney was funny but for my taste was just a little too critical of Obama.

Mitt Romney's English roots surprise long-lost cousins

Mid morning sun shines on Dalton-in-Furness, northwestern England on September 26, 2012. Relatives of U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney were born and bred here in the 18th and 19th centuries.

A sign for Romney Road is seen on a street in Dalton-in-Furness. Not many people would associate Romney with Britain but it was in these rain-soaked plains of northern England that his ancestors lived for generations, converted to Mormonism and left for the U.S. in 1841 in search of the promised land.

Reuters reports from Barrow-in-Furness, England — Mitt Romney's fight to become America's next president has the backing of one enthusiastic group of supporters, although they don't actually have a vote: his relatives in England.

Few associate the Republican candidate with Britain but it was in England's industrial northwest that his ancestors lived for generations and converted to Mormonism before leaving for the United States in 1841 in search of the promised land.

"I saw him on the telly twice the other day, last week I think. He looks a bit like my brother," said Iveson, a retired factory worker, most of whose children have no jobs.

Painted along the side of the plane is his campaign's motto, 'Believe in America,' and website, along with his "R" logo on the tail.  The customized jet is a McDonnell-Douglas 83. Apparently, his running mate, Paul Ryan, has a similar plane, a DC-93.

On the final day of the Republican National Convention, Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan and their staffs got together to have a group picture made. I'm guessing the official photographer is the one up on the ladder and the other photographers are members of the press and other RNC attendees. As a former photographer, I know you have to take enough frames to be sure you've got one with everyone smiling, eyes open and all the faces clearly visible. With the size of this group, that can be challenging. Looks like Reuters photographer Mike Segar and Getty photographer Chip Somodevilla found a good vantage point as well.
