World Rally Championship driver drives off 20-foot cliff, lands upside-down, walks away

Abu Dhabi Racing's Emirati driver Mohammed al-Sahlawi veers off a cliff during the first stage of the Jordan Rally, round three of the FIA Middle East Rally Championship, in Sweimeh near the Dead Sea on May 10, 2013. The drivers escaped unhurt.

    By The National
Two of Abu Dhabi Racing's drivers fell foul of the tough terrain on the opening day of Rally Jordan, with one falling 20 feet off a cliff while another was left dangling over the edge.

While Mohammed Al Sahlawi and his co-driver Allan Harryman got away with their close encounter as their Citroen DS3 R3 2WD car was pulled away from the edge by spectators and marshals, Majed Al Shamsi and his co-driver John Higgins were not as fortunate.

They slid off at the same point as Al Sahlawi, falling 20 feet and landing on its roof. Al Shamsi was taken to a clinic with his shoulder in a sling for a precautionary check-up, but his Irish co-driver John Higgins said: "We're both fine."

Higgins added: "We came to a loose sharp left with a big drop, and the back wheels went over the edge. The car just fell back over the edge and landed upside down." Continue reading

Mlive.com story: Keep your eyes on the nose as NASCAR heads to Phoenix

Steve Kaminski of The Grand Rapids Press writes:
NASCAR Sprint Cup cars debuted its new nose last weekend at Daytona.

Just how the cars will react on the Phoenix track is the big story heading into the second race of the season, but I think it will be all good. The cars will have more downforce and will handle better in traffic.

I said it with the photo of Danica Patrick, and I'll say it again; racing eyes are wide open. It's almost the look of an autistic, taking everything in, all at once, 180 degrees or better, keen to motion and presence, nothing overlooked, lest danger prevail.

Danica Patrick, driver of the GoDaddy.com Chevrolet, gets out of her car after qualifying for the NASCAR Nationwide Series DRIVE4COPD 300 at Daytona International Speedway on February 18, 2011 in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Danica Patrick qualifies to race at Daytona

PHOENIX - The first woman to win an IndyCar race, Danica Patrick was an established icon on the open-wheel circuit when, a year ago, she decided to give stock cars a try on a part-time basis.

Unfamiliar with the heavier, bulkier cars in the Nationwide circuit, Patrick went through a sometimes-difficult rookie season filled with back-of-the-pack finishes. Insisting she wasn't stretched too thin trying to run in two circuits, she kept plugging away in the Nationwide series, gaining comfort and confidence with each race.

Even though her average finish in 13 races was 28th, she closed strong, qualifying 14th before being wrecked with what appeared to be a Top-15 car in California and ending the season with a 19th at Homestead.

With Daytona, the first of her four opening Nationwide races, Patrick is ready to hit the gas again.

"I feel a lot more comfortable," she said. "I'm continuing to understand the limits of the car. I still have a lot to learn, it's still pretty new. I've got about a third of a season under my belt, but definitely better off than I was last year, so I'm looking forward to it."

'Spinning': Motorsport burns rubber in South Africa

    Nic Bothma / EPA

Eddie Canther, a.k.a. "Eddie Rasta"' from the Sevens Spinning club burns out the back tires of his modified Ford V6 during a stationary burnout outside his home and workshop in Elsies River in Cape Town, South Africa, Sept. 23

Hundreds of tires used for spinning are piled up outside the workshop and home of Jeff Flandorp from the Fear Factor spinning club in Eldorado Park in Cape Town, South Africa, Sept. 28.

EPA photojournalist Nic Bothma reports that spinning is one of the newest and grittiest forms of motor sport on the African continent. Spinning consists of rotating wheels and vehicles at high speed, making a car spin and melt or burn its tyres in a complex dance-like movement across a designated spinning patch. Almost every weekend spinning drivers from across Cape Town gather in vacant parking lots and industrial areas and spin their vehicles to the cheers of captivated crowds.

YouTube, meanwhile, has a few clips of Mr. Canther, a.k.a. "Eddie Rasta" in action. In the first, he completely exits his car during a spin, and then gets back in. It's worth a watch, though beware the audio consists primarily of a loud, high-pitched squealing sound, punctuated with some seriously labored internal combustion noise:
