A village is covered by mud flow from Mount Merapi in Yogyakarta on January 10, 2011.

View of destroyed village months after Mount Merapi eruption

    By Mish Whalen

Amazing photo showing the destruction from Indonesia's most active volcano, Mount Merapi in central Java, that has killed more than 350 people in a series of violent eruptions which started in late October. It reminds me of a recent TV program I just saw on the Montserrat Volcano.

Residents flee on motorcycle under volcanic ash fall during evacuation from a village in Klaten district, Nov. 3, 2010, after Mount Merapi erupted. Indonesia's Mount Merapi volcano exploded in a frightening new eruption of lava and red-hot rocks Nov. 3, sparking panic and forcing the government to order new evacuations. Scientists said the 9,616-foot mountain in central Java erupted with more force than last week's blasts that killed 36 people, spewing huge clouds of searing gas into the sky.

Mount Merapi spews hot lava seen from Kemalang Balerante village, Klaten, Indonesia. Indonesia's Mount Merapi volcano erupted again on Nov. 2, sending a plume about 1,500 meters above the mountain.

And on the other side of the world...

In a buzzing newsroom on election night, images like this remind us that - while it may not feel like it now - there are dramas playing out in the world that having nothing to do with who gets elected.

Villagers escape as Mount Merapi erupts in Deles village, Klaten, Indonesia, on Oct. 31. Indonesia's Mount Merapi volcano erupted again on Sunday, sending a plume of ash and smoke about 3,500 metres into the air.

    Escape route

I can only imagine the urgency that these people must be feeling to get far, far away from the volcano's reach.
