Tiffany Hartley speaks at a rally at the Capitol in Denver on March 30, 2011, where she demanded that the U.S. government do more to find the body of her husband, David Hartley, who was presumably gunned down on a lake along the Texas - Mexico border.

Colorado woman pleads for help in finding the body of her murdered husband

    AP reports
DENVER — A Colorado woman is demanding that the U.S. government do more to find the body of her husband, six months after he was presumably gunned down on a lake along Texas' border with Mexico.

Tiffany Hartley, who lives east of Greeley in Weld County, said nothing has been done since Mexican officials called off a search for David Hartley on Oct. 14. She held a rally with family and supporters at the Colorado Capitol on Wednesday asking state officials to pressure the Obama administration to do more to find her husband and to secure the border.

Tiffany Hartley told authorities she and her husband were using personal watercraft on Falcon Lake when they were approached Sept. 30 by Mexican pirates who shot and killed her husband. The couple were returning to Texas after photographing a historic church on the Mexican side of the lake, Hartley said.

"We don't want to leave him in the hands of the enemy," she told The Associated Press, referring to suspected pirates or drug smugglers known to roam the lake about 45 miles northwest of McAllen, Texas. "If we get his body back, we can at last honor him the way he would want to be honored, at least by his family."

No death certificate has been issued, and Mexican officials have told Hartley the case remains open.

Go home and honor your husband by not making stupid statements and demands. That adventure did not turn out too good eh..... what were you thinking? And your demands ring hollow - your husband is never going to be found. Your struggle is foolish and useless - his body means nothing.

In a brutal month for law enforcement officials, two more police officers were killed in the line of duty in Florida on Monday--it was the latest in a stretch of five similar incidents in as many days. NBC's Mark Potter reports.

Slums across the country need to be policed differently. Why go into a gang ridden neighborhood to serve a warrant? Made no sense. Makes no sense to me. Family, friends and fellow officers paid final respects Monday morning two two Miami-Dade officers who were killed in the line of duty last week. Funerals followed a memorial service for Officers Roger Castillo and Amanda Haworth.

The two officers' bodies arrived were led by a procession from the Vista Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home in Miami Lakes to the arena, where Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez, Miami Archbishop Thomas Wenski and Miami-Dade Police Director James Loftus spoke at the memorial.

Thousands showed up Sunday at the wake for Castillo and Haworth at Vista Memorial Gardens, forming a long line that stretched outside the funeral home.

Castillo and Haworth were killed last Thursday in a shootout with murder suspect Johnny Simms in Liberty City. Castillo, 41, and Haworth, 44, were part of a warrant task force that was looking for the 22-year-old Simms, who police described as a career criminal.

Castillo, a 21-year veteran of the force, left behind a wife and three children. Haworth, a 23-year veteran, was the single mother of a teen son.

My prayers are with these families. We take for granted that when we walk out the door to go to our respective jobs that we will be home that evening or that our loved one will be home - all to often, too much anymore, this is not the case due to a senseless act of violence.

    According to AP:

Tens of thousands of people have attended the funeral in Northern Ireland of a 27-year-old schoolteacher strangled on her honeymoon on the resort island of Mauritius. Mourners packed narrow country lanes leading to a Catholic Church to honor Michaela Harte McAreavey. Her widower, Gaelic footballer John McAreavey, and father Mickey Harte led pallbearers carrying her coffin. She was buried in her wedding dress. McAreavey was known as Ulster's candidate in the 2004 Rose of Tralee, Ireland's traditional beauty pageant, and as a match-day sidekick to Harte, a national championship-winning Gaelic football coach. Mauritian police say she was strangled a week ago after encountering burglars in her honeymoon suite. Three hotel employees have been charged in connection with her slaying.

Reflections of the destruction of a landmark hotel in east Jerusalem and of gruesome murders in Mexico

By Katie Cannon, Senior Multimedia Editor

I ran across the picture of the murdered men yesterday and then saw the image from east Jerusalem this morning and realized how much I like this technique when it is done well. It adds depth to the picture, makes the reader think a little more and work just a little harder to see all of the details and can soften a horrible scene. You can read more about the demolition of the hotel here and more about the muders in Mexico here.

A reflection of the Shepherd Hotel is seen on a window of a passing bus in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheik Jarrah, Sunday, Jan. 9. Bulldozers demolished the hotel in an Arab east Jerusalem neighborhood Sunday to make way for a new Israeli enclave, moving ahead with a plan that has angered the Palestinians and the U.S.

Mexican policemen are reflected in the glass of a taxi that was found stuffed with six bodies in Acapulco, Mexico, Saturday, Jan. 8. Several separate violent incidents overnight in this Pacific resort city have dozens dead, including one where the bodies of 15 men, all but one of them headless, were found on a street outside a shopping center.

Juxtaposing these two events is sensationalist and has no place on MSNBC's otherwise solid coverage of Middle East affairs. This dilapidated hotel, which was purchased legally by a US Jewish philanthropist, was once home to the Nazi collaborator and Muslim leader Mufti Haj Amin Al-Husseini. Af …

In this handout photo provided by the Dagsa Family on Tuesday, Jan. 4, an alleged assassin aims a gun at Reynaldo Dagsa, who was taking a picture of his family early Jan. 1, just outside their residence at Caloocan city, north of Manila, Philippines. Police say Dagsa was shot seconds later and died of his wounds. The photo was given to police by the family and the man identified in the picture was arrested Monday. The original photograph given to the police showed the three surviving family members smiling at the camera. The family, fearing further attacks, requested that the photograph be cropped to protect their identities.

As the mother of a three-year-old boy, stories like this make my heart race when I think about the years ahead, as the world seems to become a more and more dangerous place. This site offers some tips that may come in handy if your child wants to either host or attend a party. Do any of you parents or kids out there have tips to add?
