Vanderbilt takes down Kentucky, FSU beats North Carolina as March Madness nears

    Jonathan Bachman / Reuters

Vanderbilt Commodores forward James Siakam (35) celebrates with his teammates after their team defeated the Kentucky Wildcats 71-64 during the final of the SEC men's NCAA basketball tournament in New Orleans, La., March 11. Vanderbilt has not won the SEC Championship since 1951.

The Commodores took down No. 1 Kentucky 71-64 in the SEC tournament title, denying the ‘Cats a chance to sweep the league’s regular-season and tourney titles, not to mention taking some of the sheen off the nation’s most dominant team. Kentucky entered the game with 24 consecutive wins.

No. 17 Florida State used a sharp-shooting performance from three-point range and 18 points from all-conference guard Michael Snaer to beat the No. 4 Tar Heels, 85-82, and win the ACC tournament title.

It was a much closer game than the 33-point beatdown that the Seminoles gave North Carolina on January 14th, but Florida State was helped to victory on Sunday afternoon by many of the same things that got them a win earlier in the year.

FSU beats Duke in ACC semis, 62-59

Seminoles coach Leonard Hamilton said his team learned something when the Blue Devils mounted their inevitable charge to erase the deficit.

"I thought we grew up a little bit in that stretch when the game was in doubt," Hamilton said.

Florida State advanced to only the second ACC tournament championship game in the program's history by beating Duke 62-59 on Saturday. Michael Snaer scored 16 points, including a 3-pointer with 3:27 remaining that gave the Seminoles the lead for good.

Overmatched Howard loses 89-34 at No. 17 Kansas

AP reports: LAWRENCE, Kan. - Howard knew what it was getting into when it scheduled a two-game swing through the Sunflower State. It can only hope to fare better against Kansas State than it did at No. 17 Kansas.

Prince Okoroh had seven points and six rebounds to lead the Bison, who fell 89-34 to the Jayhawks on Thursday night. Howard watched as the bigger, stronger team from the Big 12 raced out to a double-digit lead in the opening minutes and never looked back as it prepped for conference play.

"We got our butts kicked," Howard coach Kevin Nickelberry said.

Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore reacts after losing to 36-35 to TCU on Nov. 12, in Boise, Idaho.

No. 5 Boise State falls to TCU, dreams of perfect season crushed

    According to AP:

TCU coach Gary Patterson made a gutsy call, opting to put the game in Pachall's hands and go for the lead instead of the tie. It worked. Pachall tossed a short pass to Josh Boyce, who fought his way into the end zone, putting TCU up 36-35 and quieting a raucous Bronco Stadium crowd.

Patterson said the decision to go for two points was easy considering the circumstances.

"We're not going to win this if this keeps going," Patterson said. "So, the only way we're going to be able to do it is to steal it. We were able to get the play and get the points and we were fortunate that they missed a field goal. It's just as simple as that."

Wow, that is one big aircraft carrier.

From AP: As long as the rain stays away from the Carrier Classic on the flight deck of the USS Carl Vinson on Friday afternoon, coaches Tom Izzo of Michigan State and Roy Williams of No. 1 North Carolina are confident their teams will put on a great Veterans Day show for the approximately 7,000 in the crowd, including the nation's basketball-fan-in-chief, President Barack Obama, plus a national TV audience.

Izzo and Williams said they and their players were blown away when they boarded the nuclear-powered carrier, which stretches 1,092 feet, weighs 95,000 tons and has four steam catapults that can accelerate a jet fighter from 0 to 165 mph in just more than two seconds.
