Air tanker crash kills 2 at site of Utah wildfire

Photos by Scott G Winterton / AP

The crash scene of a heavy air tanker is seen from the air, June 4, 2012, near Hamblin Valley Utah. The P2v Heavy air tanker crashed Sunday afternoon, killing pilots Todd Neal Tompkins and Ronnie Edwin Chambless, both of Boise, Idaho.

The crash and fire are seen from the air Monday.

    The Associated Press reports:

An air tanker dropping retardant on a remote wildfire along the Utah-Nevada line crashed Sunday afternoon, killing both crew members, authorities said.

The pilots were fighting the 5,000-acre White Rock Fire, which began burning Friday night after a lightning strike in eastern Nevada. The fire spread across the Utah line Saturday night, but most of the blaze remained in Nevada, about 150 miles northeast of Las Vegas.

Forest fires continue to rage in the Southwest, where two pilots were killed over the weekend when the air tanker they were flying crashed near the Utah-Nevada border. An hour later, another air tanker was forced to make a belly landing outside Reno, Nev., when landing gear malfunctioned. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

Winds, heat hamper fight to contain Southwest wildfires

    James Glover / Reuters

An Army National Guard helicopter drops water on the Topaz Ranch Estates Fire as it burns in the canyons above Wellington, Nevada, on May 23, 2012.

Reuters reports — Fire crews hampered by wind gusts and the driest conditions in two decades in the U.S. Southwest made slow gains on Wednesday battling dangerous forest and brush fires, including a wildfire in Nevada that doubled in size overnight and destroyed 17 buildings and two homes.

The Topaz Ranch Estates wildfire is just 15 percent contained and poses a threat in foothills that are the driest they have been in 20 years, authorities said.

See earlier pictures of the Nevada fire on PhotoBlog

"We're doing everything we can to keep it on the hill, but it could jump the line or come out the canyon," said Mark Regan, a battalion chief with the Lake Tahoe Fire Department.

"It's very steep terrain," Regan said, adding that fire engines cannot access the area, and firefighters have to hike on rough terrain to reach the blaze. Read the full story.

NASA releases photo of meteor blazing across Nevada skies

Lisa Warren / NASA-JPL via AP

An image provided by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory shows a meteor over Reno, Nevada on April 22, 2012.

By David R Arnott, NBC News

NASA has released a photograph of a flaming meteor that unleashed a powerful sonic boom Sunday morning, rattling houses in California and Nevada when its disintegration released energy equivalent to a 5-kiloton explosion.

The former space rock entered Earth's atmosphere around 8 a.m. PT on April 22 and exploded over California's Central Valley, according to NASA, which pinpointed the location in a map posted on its website.

According to space.com, several witnesses initially thought they had experienced an earthquake.

"An event of this size might happen about once a year," said Don Yeomans of NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office. "But most of them occur over the ocean or an uninhabited area, so getting to see one is something special."
