Thousands flee as high winds fuel blaze near Reno

    James Glover II / Reuters

Crew members from the Nevada Department of Forestry work to control the Washoe Drive fire near a home in Washoe City, Nevada, on Jan. 19, 2012. The wind-driven fire raged through parched brush near Reno, Nevada, on Thursday, engulfing a number of homes, and prompting residents and livestock to flee by the thousands as belching smoke from the blaze forced the closure of a major highway.

    James Glover II / Reuters

A home along Highway 395 stands in the path of the Washoe Drive fire in Washoe City on Jan. 19, 2012.

NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services report:

Firefighters worked early Friday to hold the line on a fast-moving brush fire that tore through the Reno area, destroying more than 20 homes and forcing thousands of residents to flee.

The blaze started shortly after noon Thursday and, fueled by wind gusts reaching 82 mph, mushroomed to more than 6 square miles in size before firefighters stopped its surge toward Reno. Read the full story.

Drone-spotting at secret Nevada base stirs up debate

    Google Earth / DigitalGlobe

A satellite image of Yucca Lake in Nevada, acquired on March 13, shows what appears to be a Predator or Reaper drone being towed at a restricted airstrip.

By Alan Boyle, Science Editor, NBC News

A satellite photo that appears to show a military-style drone at a secret Nevada air base is stirring up a buzz on the Web, but don't worry: The imagery you're seeing on Google Earth is tweaked to avoid compromising national security.

The picture, which became the subject of multiple news reports over the past week, demonstrates the power of 24/7 satellite surveillance. It focuses on a dry lakebed, known as Yucca Lake, which has been used for secret projects for decades. Like the better-known Area 51, this patch of the desert (sometimes referred to as Area 6) is closely watched by amateur aficionados. It's been seen as a test site for unmanned aerial vehicles like the MQ-1 Predator, the MQ-9 Reaper and the RQ-170 Sentinel for at least the past three years.

    Google / Digital Earth

A close-up taken from orbital imagery shows what appears to be an unmanned aerial vehicle sitting out at the Yucca Lake airfield.

RQ-170 Sentinels are in the news because the state-of-the-art spy drone was downed in Iranian territory, representing what appears to be a serious security setback for the U.S. military. The Nevada picture on Google Earth, which was acquired in March by one of DigitalGlobe's satellites and fed into the Google Earth system, doesn't show a Sentinel. It looks like one of the less advanced, less swoopy Predators or Reapers. Of course, there's always a chance that the craft is a decoy. (We are talking about secret air bases, after all.)

Flight Global's website, which published the image last week, speculated that the airfield is being used by the CIA to test hardware and software for its classified aerial operations. Since then, other news reports have been asking whether Google Earth is compromising national security.

U.S. satellite operators have worked out agreements with the federal government that govern the resolution of imagery made available through public databases, and you can imagine that the public images are fuzzier than the satellites' full capability. There can also be restrictions on what areas are targeted during particular times.

Potentially embarrassing images can surface, of course — such as pictures of drones in an area of Pakistan where the Pakistani government said there were no drones. And the concerns could become more acute as other countries launch imaging satellites that don't have to follow U.S. rules. But the Yucca Lake photo doesn't tell anybody who has been paying attention — including the bad guys — anything they didn't know already. The fact that the picture is still available, almost a week after it was thrown into the spotlight, suggests that national security has not been endangered.

I've made inquiries with the public relations folks for Google and DigitalGlobe, and if I hear anything back I'll update this item.

The Google Earth image serves as today's offering from the Cosmic Log Advent Calendar, which features views of Earth from space every day from now until Christmas. Check back for another image on Tuesday, and check out these previous offerings:

Sorry to break the news, America is no longer a free democratic nation. America is now (and has been for awhile actually) a plutocracy where the rich and super rich are in charge. What we need is a good old fashioned revolution. I think its about time we got rid of the cancer in D.C. and Wall Street …

Reno fire likely caused by power line arcing, some residents see what is left of their homes

    Max Whittaker / Reuters

Madeleine Perry, left, and her mother Karen Reuter comfort each other as they look over the remains of Karen's mother's burned home in Reno, Nev., Nov. 19. Nevada's governor declared a state of emergency on Friday over a wildfire raging at the edge of a hilly Reno suburb that has damaged 32 structures, forced nearly 10,000 people from their homes, burned 2,000 acres and was blamed for an elderly man's death.

According to msnbc.com staff and news service reports:

The wind grounded firefighting helicopters and made it difficult for firefighters to approach Caughlin Ranch, the affluent subdivision bordering pine-forested hills where the fire likely began after 12:30 a.m. It also helped the fire spread from 400 acres to more than 3 square miles.

The gusts were comparable to the Santa Ana winds that often aggravate and spread wildfires in the hills surrounding Los Angeles, officials said.

"The wind is horrific," said Reno spokeswoman Michele Anderson. "We just watched a semi nearly blow over on the freeway."

Residents watch a fire, near homes along Manzanita Lane near Broken Arrow, spread in Reno, Nev. on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011. Nevada firefighters are battling a wind-whipped wildfire that has already burned several homes and caused several injuries. Reno Fire Chief Michael Hernandez says fire crews are having a tough time "getting ahead of" the 400-acre blaze. He also says flames broke off into two areas in Caughlin Ranch. Hernandez says about a dozen homes have burned.

Nevada has declared a state of emergency as a wildfire in Reno has taken over 400-acres, destroyed over 20 homes and caused the evacuation of thousands.

    NBC News and msnbc.com reports:

"It's tough man, it's tough," Reno Fire Chief Michael Hernandez told the Reno Gazette-Journal on Friday. "The winds are not helping us at all."

High winds are expected until about midnight. Winds were forecast out of the southwest at 20-35 mph with gusts up to 65 mph, the National Weather Service said. Downslope gusts up to 80 mph were possible in the foothills.

    By Phaedra Singelis, NBC News

I wonder if the men in the first image could have possibly imagined what the dam would look like, how many people it would take to build it and how many would lose their lives while it was under construction.

    According to USA Today:

The 726.4-high concrete expanse on the Colorado River was dedicated on Sept. 30, 1935, by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Formerly named for Republican president Herbert Hoover, it was christened as less political Boulder Dam by Democrat Roosevelt, then later reverted to its original name. More than 100 workers were killed during the dam's construction.

A Geminid meteor streaks between peaks of the Seven Sisters rock formation, Dec. 14, 2010, in the Valley of Fire State Park in Nev. The meteor display is thought to be the result of debris cast off from an asteroid-like object called 3200 Phaethon. The shower is visible every December.

Meteor shower lights up the skies of Nevada

    By Robert Hood

There are a couple interesting things happening in Ethan Miller’s photograph. Not only did he capture a picture of the meteor, but he made a picture of the rock formation by painting with light.

“Painting with Light” is a photographic technique in which the exposure is made at night with the use of a hand-held light. The photographer uses a very slow shutter speed and then moves around the scene with a light during the exposure and selectively paints light into the frame. The results can be otherworldly, because the subject often looks like it has an internal glow.
