Grid failure left more than 300 million people without power in New Delhi and much of northern India for hours on Monday in the worst blackout for more than a decade, highlighting chronic infrastructure woes holding back Asia's third-largest economy.

A major power outage has struck northern India, plunging cities into darkness and stranding hundreds of thousands of commuters.

Reuters reports -- A massive grid failure in Delhi and much of northern India left more than 300 million people without electricity on Monday in one of the worst blackouts to hit the country in more than a decade.

The lights in Delhi and seven states went out about 2 a.m and had not been restored by the morning rush-hour, leaving the capital's workers sweltering overnight, then stranded at metro stations in the morning as trains were cancelled.

Many areas of New Delhi are facing acute water shortages, The Associated Press reports, a repeated annual phenomenon during summer when taps go dry as demand rises.

The Times of India reported on July 11 that levels in 84 reservoirs monitored by government agencies are at 57% of last year's capacity following a patchy start to the monsoon season.

Bonded child laborers rescued in New Delhi, India

About 50,000 children are believed to be working in factories in New Delhi alone, with thousands more begging on the streets and sorting garbage. India recently passed a law aimed at fighting child labor by making education compulsory up to age 14. Grinding poverty still leads many kids to work, and certain industries that involve intricate machinery or delicate handiwork prefer their smaller hands. Read more about raids on child labor here

Their backward mentality can be gleaned when if you ask a person "are you a hindu" the usually poorer people will say "Yes i am and i am a Brahmin Hindu" to assert their caste superiority over the others.. It is really sad to see how there are Two Indias far worse than any place in Asia.
