The annual roller races at the bar feature professional and amateur cyclists who compete in a festive spirit that marks the end of the racing season in New York. Riders are paired against each other on colorful antique British rollers where large arrows track their speed against fellow competitors. The riders, cheered on by spectators only feet from the bicycles, compete in 500- or 1,000-meter sprints that are over in less than 30 seconds. Roller races have a long history in cycling with the first races occurring in theaters at the turn of the last century.
