As they gather to recognize the anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street protest movement, activists face several challenges. Competing agendas, leaderless organization and dwindling participation have hampered the efforts but some accomplishments have surfaced.  For more on this story click here to read the latest post by NBC News' Miranda Leitsinger.

'Occupy' protesters hold onto their position during an eviction process from the HSBC bank headquarters area in Hong Kong on September 11, 2012. The authorities sent bailiffs to evict protesters camped outside the bank's headquarters, the last outpost of the anti-capitalist movement in Asia.

A bailiff, left, shows a notice to a protester as members of the media crowd around during an eviction process from the HSBC bank headquarters area in Hong Kong on September 11, 2012.

The Associated Press reports from Hong Kong — One of the global Occupy movement's longest-running encampments came to an end Tuesday in Hong Kong as bailiffs cleared out anti-capitalist activists and their belongings from a site underneath HSBC's Asian headquarters.

As nightfall neared, a handful of them clung to two sofas, all that was left of a camp that had included a dozen tents, tables, bookcases, gas cookers and lamps. They were surrounded by black-clad bailiffs who dragged them away one by one after earlier cataloguing and packing up their belongings. Read the full story.

The Occupy movement's last Asian outpost is due to be closed down on Monday as protesters in Hong Kong face a deadline to leave their camp.

On August 13 a court approved the eviction of protesters camped outside the HSBC bank headquarters, giving them until 9 p.m. (9 a.m. ET) on August 27 to leave the courtyard of the bank's downtown office tower, Agence France Presse reported.

Even though arrests, pepper spray, and civil disobedience grabbed headlines and air waves around the world, photographers did manage to capture moments of humor, fun and quiet amid the sometimes violent protests.

Occupy protesters gather in New York; arrests follow

    John Minchillo / AP

An Occupy Wall Street protestor yells at the police after arrests were made following a march to celebrate the protest's sixth month on Saturday. With the city's attention focused on the huge St. Patrick's Day Parade many blocks uptown, the Occupy rally at Zuccotti Park on Saturday drew a far smaller crowd than the demonstrations seen in the city when the movement was at its peak in the fall. A couple hundred people attended.

    Eduardo Munoz / Reuters

NYPD officers clash with members of the Occupy Wall St movement at Zuccotti park in New York on Saturday. Hundreds of Occupy Wall Street activists descended on New York's Zuccotti Park on Saturday night, threatening to re-establish a foothold at the movement's birthplace on the six-month anniversary of its inception and four months after a pre-dawn eviction undercut its momentum.

Police announced Zuccotti Park closed for the evening Saturday after protesters spent the day celebrating a six-month anniversary, chanting, cheering and marching down Wall Street before returning to the park.

More than 100 officers pushed through the park crowd. Many protesters shouted and officers took out their batons after a demonstrator threw a glass bottle at a bus that police were using to detain more than a dozen protesters.

At least two people were loaded into ambulances.

50 arrested as Occupy Wall Street tries to seize church lot for new camp

NYPD officers push a fence back against activists as they try and gain entrance to the private park owned by Trinity Church next to Duarte Square at Sixth Avenue and Canal Street on Dec. 17, in New York City. Retired Episcopal bishop George E. Packard, left, who is affiliated with the Occupy Wall Street movement, climbs a ladder to illegally enter Juan Pablo Duarte Square during a march in New York, Dec. 17.

    From msnbc.com's Miranda Leitsinger:

    Bryan Smith / Zuma Press

Bishop George Packard is under arrest after entering the privately owned area of Duarte Sqaure.

"This whole occupation has been a lesson in freedom for me," said Ashley Perry, 24, who traveled from her home in Tampa, Fla., to support her New York counterparts. "If you still think that you have your First Amendment rights, go out and try to express them… and see how long it takes for someone to come and shut you down -- it will happen quickly."

Earlier in the day, demonstrators played drums, cymbals and trombones, held group meetings and waved signs with a variety of messages -- "Disobedience is civil" and "Sorry to inconvenience your apathy" -- as they marked the completion of three months with a major direct action that they hoped would give them a new home as authorities continue to shutter camps nationwide.

Protesters -- flanked by police officers -- coalesced on the nearly half-acre plot about one mile northwest of their former camp at Zuccotti Park. But their potential new landlord at Duarte Square, Trinity Church, had long voiced strong opposition.

"In all good conscience and faith, we strongly believe to do so would be wrong, unsafe, unhealthy and potentially injurious," its rector, The Rev. Dr. James H. Cooper, said in a statement dated Dec. 9 and posted to the church website. "The health, safety and security problems posed by an encampment here, compounded by winter weather, would dwarf those experienced at Zuccotti Park. Calling this an issue of 'political sanctuary' is manipulative and blind to reality."

The city had repeatedly warned the protesters to move from the public plaza at the foot of Market Street in recent weeks and tried unsuccessfully to negotiate a move to another location. Read the full story.
