64 year-old tub of lard still 'fit for consumption'

Bernd Wuestneck / AFP - Getty Images

A 64-year old tub of Swift's Bland lard is pictured on February 1, 2012 in Rostock, northeastern Germany.

Bernd Wuestneck / AFP - Getty Images

Hans Feldmeier, 87-year-old owner of a 64-year old tub of lard, presents his Swift's Bland Lard.

Retired chemist Hans Feldmeier, 87, told AFP he had received the pig fat as a student in 1948 near the northern city of Rostock as part of the post-war US aid program. "I just didn't want to throw it away," he explained. Finally, after 64 years, he took it to food safety agents and was astonished at their appraisal.

"There is of course a slight lack of smell and taste," sniffed Frerk Feldhusen, from the office of agriculture, food safety and fisheries in the eastern state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

However, "all in all, given its level of freshness and its material composition, the product is assessed as satisfactory," Feldhusen said, adding it would stand up to today's definition of being fit for the dinner table.

La Tamborrada Festival is celebrated in Spain

    By Mish Whalen

According to spanishunlimited.com: "As with many Spanish traditions, the origin of La Tamborrada is a bit twisted. It appears as though in 1720 a baker was filling water barrels from a fountain near the Iglesia de San Vicente. While filling the barrels he began to sing, and a group of young girls passing by started banging on the barrels as accompaniment. A crowd started to gather and this impromptu jam session evolved into the spectacle you see today."

    Alvaro Barrientos / AP

Several ''Tamborilleros'' wearing the costume of cooks participate in the traditional ' La Tamborrada' during 'El Dia Grande', the main day of San Sebastian feasts, in the Basque city of San Sebastian, northern Spain, on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011.

Equipped with branches of pine trees and cow bells, some so-called 'Silvesterchlaus' (New Years Claus) walk towards a farm house to offer their best wishes for the New Year (following the Julian calendar) to the farmers in this region in Urnaesch, Switzerland, on Thursday, January 13, 2011.

What an interesting custom! When I first saw this, I thought they were hunters in camoflauge. The caption goes on to say that after the New Year Claus' sing and dance, they then receive food, hot drinks or money.

Injured turtle gets new set of wheels

    By Mish Whalen

About two months ago, Tzvika was run over by a lawn mower and suffered severe damage to her shell and an injury that affected her ability to use her rear limbs. The wheels, attached by veterinarians at the safari, elevate the turtle to keep the shell from being worn down and enable her to walk.

An 18-karat solid gold Monopoly set covered with hundreds of precious gemstones is seen at the Museum of American Finance in New York October 15, 2010.

    Go directly to jail

I have great childhood memories of the game Monopoly, and I think it's a real piece of Americana. But I have to wonder what the folks at the Museum of Finance on Wall Street were thinking when they decided to display this solid gold set in the current economic climate.

Workers lay down grass on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, left, before the start of the Breakfast on the Bridge event in central Sydney, on Oct. 10. Traffic on the bridge was closed so that more than 7,000 people could gather to have breakfast on the main deck of the Sydney Harbour bridge. According to local media, Australia's national soccer team, the "Socceroos" agreed to attend this event to help increase Australia's chances of hosting the 2022 World Cup.

    Breakfast on the bridge

It is amazing that in 1932 a bridge was built that is this wide and can carry so much traffic. Well, that is when it's not closed for the occasional picnic. If you find yourself in Sydney, definitely take the time to do the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb to the top of the steel structure, as the views are amazing.
