Jockey Jonatan Bartoletti, representing the Valmontone parish, rides to win the Palio race in Siena, Italy, on Aug. 16. Almost without fail since the mid-1600s, ten bareback riders compete twice a year around Siena's shell-shaped central square in a bid to win the Palio, a silk banner depicting the Madonna and child.

Horses of the Contrada of Unicorn, Eagle and Giraff fall down in the Casato curve during the Palio horseracing on July 2 in Siena. The Palio is a medieval horse race and pageant, which pits the ancient districts of Siena against each other in competition for the victory banner and in honor of the Virgin Mary. Animal rights group have often expressed their concern about the injuries and deaths of horses who frequently fall, collide, or are trampled during the race.

Horse Down. I first heard about The Palio in a book I read entitled "Too Much Tuscan Sun", this is a very rag tag event, it's almost the demolishion derby of medieval times carried on.
