Pope Francis issued an appeal for the protection of the weak, the poor and the world environment Tuesday at a special Mass marking his inauguration as the new leader of the world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics.

During the homily, he told a crowd of up to 200,000 gathered in front of the Vatican: “I would like to ask all those who have positions of responsibility in economic, political and social life, and all men and women of goodwill: Let us be protectors of creation, protectors of God’s plan inscribed in nature, protectors of one another and of the environment.” Continue reading this story here.

By John Makely / NBC News - As night falls, the National September 11 Memorial takes on a whole different feeling. Crowds become sparse, construction ceases and the traffic of lower Manhattan seems to fade away. You are left with the sounds of cascading water and the rustling of trees.  There is no better place to reflect on what happened on September 11, 2001, and the lives that were lost.

Panoramic image: Annular solar eclipse from Lassen Volcanic National Park in California

    By John Brecher

We've published a number of photos from today's annular eclipse that happened in Asia and the western US, many of which show telephoto views of the moon's disk obscuring part of the sun. Take a step back with this panorama created by msnbc.com's John Brecher, stitched together from several images, to see some of the other sights that surround you during a solar eclipse: note the ring-shaped shadows on the white van made by light filtering through the trees, the reduced-contrast quality of the sunlight that's been shaped by the moon's edges, and the reactions of people as they use various optics to observe the phenomenon.

Click here to see the above image fullscreen.

Read all about today's eclipse in this piece by Alan Boyle in Cosmic Log.

    John Makely / msnbc.com

Work continues on One World Trade Center as the building reached 100 stories and approached the height of the Empire State Building.

One World Trade Center is well on its way to a planned 1,776 feet tall, reaching 100 stories this week. We were given the opportunity to spend some time on the site and Rock Center interviewed several construction workers who work there everyday. While many of us feel a sense of pride watching the massive structure grow on a daily basis, these workers are changing the skyline of New York and honoring those lost with every piece of steel.

Six years since construction began on 1 World Trade Center, the tower will soon surpass the height of the Empire State Building's roof. The iron workers placing and setting each beam in the shadow of the 9/11 attacks say they are building out of a "sense of necessity" and know that the tower, now soaring nearly 1300 feet, will help the nation and the iron workers themselves heal. Many of the workers building the tower helped clean the smoldering debris in the days after the terrorist attack. Harry Smith reports.

Take a spin on the ice at Rockefeller Center

    By John Makely, NBC News

When I was a little kid growing up outside of New York City, my family always tried to make the yearly trip to Rockefeller Plaza to see the Christmas tree and the holiday displays at the department stores. The skating rink and the Plaza have always felt like a special place around the holidays, full of energy and perhaps a bit of nostalgia as well, at least for me.

Opened in 1936, The Ice Skating Rink at Rockefeller Center celebrates its 75th year as one of the most visited attractions in New York City. The panorama above is a composite of over 65 separate photographs merged together to represent an immersive 360-degree view from the center of the ice.

Below is a video from Brian Williams on the history of the ice rink and a time-lapse video of the installation of the 12-ton, 2011 Christmas tree.

People have been hitting the ice at Rockefeller Center since 1936. Today, the ice skating rink is one of the most visited New York destinations during the holiday season. Brian Williams gives a special tour of the rink and looks back on its history.

Watch as our cameras capture the intricate process that transforms and illuminates a 12-ton Christmas tree in New York City's Rockefeller Plaza.

The memorial is beautiful! I'm glad it was done. It was deserved for all of those who lost their lives. I hope to make it to New York one day to see it. And I agree with Ms. Peart. America can, and should be very proud of it.

An illuminated view of the National 9/11 Memorial

    By John Makely, NBC News

For almost ten years the bulk of the construction work at Ground Zero has been on the vast infrastructure below ground. Now, seeing the memorial site illuminated by the rising towers, I'm relieved to see that this hallowed space  is surrounded by a vibrant city.

To navigate the panorama above use the tools in the lower left corner. The panorama consists of about 35 separate images stitched together with software to represent a 180 degree view of the site.
