McCain defends immigration plan to angry Arizona crowd

    Matt York / AP

U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., listens to a question during a town hall in Sun Lakes, Ariz., Feb. 19, 2013.

The Associated Press reports — During a heated town hall gathering in the Phoenix suburb of Sun Lakes, Sen. John McCain said the border near Yuma is largely secure, but he said smugglers are using the border near Tucson to pump drugs into Phoenix. He said immigration reform should be contingent on better border security that must rely largely on technology able to detect border crossings.

The Daily Rundown's Chuck Todd shares details from the tense meeting which took place in Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday.

"There are 11 million people living here illegally," he said. "We are not going to get enough buses to deport them."

Some audience members shouted out their disapproval.

One man yelled that only guns would discourage illegal immigration. Another man complained that illegal immigrants should never be able to become citizens or vote. A third man said illegal immigrants were illiterate invaders who wanted free government benefits.

McCain urged compassion. "We are a Judeo-Christian nation," he said. Read the full story.

Daring fan attempts catch at MLB home run derby

    By Jonathan Woods, msnbc.com

In the second time in less than a week, a fan has gone over a railing trying to catch a ball at a major league baseball park. The latest incident happened during the home run derby in Phoenix, Monday night.

Fresh after the tragedy in Texas, Keith Carmickle, from Kingman, Ariz., leaned forward to grab a ball hit by Milwaukee Brewer Prince Fielder.

Fans hold the legs of Keith Carmickle, from Kingman, Ariz. as he nearly fell over a railing trying to catch a ball during the MLB Home Run Derby on Monday, July 11.

Several photographers captured the man dangling by his legs.

After taking the photo above, photographer Michael Chow said "It almost happened again. Luckily he had friends that caught his legs before he dropped. Not too smart. Plus, he dumped a $10 bucket of popcorn for a $5 ball!"

He shared his thoughts on Sportsshooter.com, a website popular among sports photographers.

Very cool time-lapse video of the dust storm taking over Phoenix

TODAY.com's Dara Brown talks with photographer Mike Olbinski, who captured a time-lapse video of a dust storm rolling into Phoenix.

    By Phaedra Singelis, NBC News

When I saw this video early this morning, I thought it was the best visual reporting of the huge dust storm that rolled through Phoenix yesterday. In this instance, time-lapse photography was better than video and or stills.

A giant dust storm covers Phoenix, Ariz., late on July 5.

NBC, msnbc.com and news services report from Phoenix:

A massive dust storm descended on the Phoenix area on Tuesday night, towering over skyscrapers and grounding flights.

The wall of dust swept across the desert from the south. KSAZ-TV reported it appeared to be roughly 50 miles wide in some spots. The dust cloud briefly blanketed downtown Phoenix at around nightfall.

Thousands of people were left without power after strong winds toppled trees and flights were delayed due to the reduced visibility. Continue reading.

Mlive.com story: Keep your eyes on the nose as NASCAR heads to Phoenix

Steve Kaminski of The Grand Rapids Press writes:
NASCAR Sprint Cup cars debuted its new nose last weekend at Daytona.

Just how the cars will react on the Phoenix track is the big story heading into the second race of the season, but I think it will be all good. The cars will have more downforce and will handle better in traffic.

I said it with the photo of Danica Patrick, and I'll say it again; racing eyes are wide open. It's almost the look of an autistic, taking everything in, all at once, 180 degrees or better, keen to motion and presence, nothing overlooked, lest danger prevail.
