Kenyans set pigs loose outside parliament to protest 'greedy' lawmakers' salary demands

A policeman tries to control pigs left by protesters outside parliament in Nairobi, Kenya, during a demonstration against lawmakers' salary demands on May 14, 2013.

Kenyan demonstrators released two dozen piglets and poured blood on the pavement at the gates of parliament in Nairobi on Tuesday to protest lawmakers' demands for a wage hike, Agence France-Presse reports.

"We will not allow members of parliament to increase their salaries at will," shouted Okiya Omtatah, one of the protest organizers. "They are greedy just like the pigs we have brought here."

Lawmakers' pay is currently $6,300 per month, Reuters reports, but they have demanded a raise to about $10,100 per month, which is 130 times the legal minimum wage in Kenya.

Pig free to roam in Spanish village — but not for long

An Iberian pig rests near villagers in La Alberca on December 14, 2012 near Salamanca, Spain.

A pig has been given the freedom to roam in a Spanish village — but the clock is ticking. The pig is due to be sacrificed on January 21 in a village raffle in La Alberca with the proceeds going to a local charity, Getty Images reports.

Dry-cured Iberian ham or Jamon Iberico de bellota is a favorite amongst Spaniards and producers are hoping for improved sales over the busy Christmas period.

The jamon legs are dry-cured for up to three years after the pigs have been fed on a diet of acorns in the last three months of their lives.

    The pig whisperer at work

'Pig whisperer' Kees Scheepens hypnotizes a piglet in Duelmen, western Germany, in a picture taken on June 22, 2012 and made available today.

"Let pigs be pigs", Scheepens advised representatives of the hog industry during a visit to Canada in 2010 in which he advocated a less intensive form of pig-rearing.

This little piggy is going to China

Haarer inspects three-and-a-half month old hogs, many of which are bound for China.

Reuters reports — Inside a dimly lit barn in northeast Indiana, where the air smells faintly of corn and earth, the future of China's food supply is squealing for attention.

A farmhand shuffles through the crowd of pigs inside pen 7E3, patting their fleshy pink backs and checking their water trough. The animals here at the Whiteshire Hamroc farm have been bred for one purpose: to be flown halfway around the world, on a journey fueled by China's appetite for food independence.

Video: Bringing American BBQ to Beijing

In a country where pork is a culinary staple, the demand for a protein-rich diet is growing faster than Chinese farmers can keep up. While Americans cut back on meat consumption to the lowest levels seen in two decades, the Chinese now eat nearly 10 percent more meat than they did five years ago.

China's solution: to super-size its supply by snapping up millions of live animals raised by U.S. farmers as breeding stock - capitalizing on decades of cutting edge agricultural research in America. Read the full story.

A pig named 'Felix' has been trained by physiotherapist Daan Vermeulen to provide emotional therapy for the elderly and for handicapped children, Getty Images photographer Ralph Orlowski reports. Vermeulen claims contact with the pig stimulates curiosity, activity and even alertness among elderly people and helps them to awaken from the passivity that often sets in as they become older. Vermeulen says he helps those patients who react with fear to the pig to channel the emotion into a positive experience.
