Cargo plane engulfed in flames after oil drum accident

    AP

Smoke billows from a British-made BAe 146 cargo plane that caught fire while being unloaded at the airport in Wamena, in Indonesia's Papua province, on May 8, 2013. An official said that the plane caught fire after an oil drum fell from the aircraft and somehow sparked the fire.

I guess that BAE no longer stands for ''bring another engine'' but for ''bring another extinguisher''.

Divers search for black box after jet crash-lands off Bali's coast

Sonny Tumbelaka / AFP - Getty Images

Members of a rescue team watch as divers prepare to retrieve the black box from a partially submerged Lion Air Boeing 737 on April 15, 2013, two days after it crashed while trying to land at Bali's international airport near Denpasar. The pilot and co-pilot of a Lion Air plane that crashed at Bali's airport have passed initial drug tests, an official said on April 15, as investigators probe the causes of the accident that left dozens injured but no fatalities.

    By Tim Hepher, Reuters

All 108 passengers and crew members survived when the Boeing 737-800 passenger jet, operated by Indonesian budget carrier Lion Air, undershot the main airport runway in Bali, Indonesia and belly-flopped in water on Saturday.

Officials stress it was too early to say what caused the incident, which is being investigated by Indonesian authorities with the assistance of U.S. crash investigators and Boeing. Continue reading.

Jet rolls off Moscow runway, splits apart

    Alexander Usoltsev / AP

Rescuers work where a plane skidded off the runway at Vnukovo airport in Moscow on Saturday, Dec. 29. The Tu-204 aircraft belonging to Moscow-based Red Wings broke into pieces and caught fire, killing several people.

"We saw how the plane skidded off the runway ... The nose, where business class is, broke off and a man fell out," said a witness, who gave his name as Alexei. "We helped him get into a mini-bus to take him to the hospital."

Another witness described pulling four people from the wreckage when he arrived at the scene before emergency service workers. "We could not get the pilot out of the cockpit but we saw a lot of blood," he told the TV station Rossiya-24.

Solar plane takes off for its first transcontinental flight

Fabrice Coffrini / AFP - Getty Images

The Swiss sun-powered aircraft Solar Impulse takes off on May 24, in Payerne on its first attempted intercontinental flight from Switzerland to Morocco. Solar Impulse, piloted by Andre Borschberg, is expected to land in Madrid for a stopover before heading to Morocco without using a drop of fuel. Bertrand Piccard will pilot the second leg on to Rabat, scheduled to leave Madrid on May 28 at the earliest.

The president of the Swiss sun-powered aircraft Solar Impulse project, Bertrand Piccard, helps pilot Andre Borschberg prepare for takeoff on May 24, in Payerne on its first attempted intercontinental flight from Switzerland to Morocco.

AP reports -- An experimental solar-powered airplane took off from Switzerland on its first transcontinental flight Thursday, aiming to reach North Africa next week.

Pilot Andre Borschberg planned to take the jumbo jet-size Solar Impulse plane on its first leg to Madrid, Spain, by Friday. His colleague Bertrand Piccard will take the helm of the aircraft for the second stretch of its 1,554-mile journey to the Moroccan capital Rabat.

Fog on the runway at its home base in Payerne, Switzerland, delayed the take off by two hours, demonstrating how susceptible the prototype single-seater aircraft is to adverse weather.

"We can't fly into clouds because it was not designed for that," Borschberg said as he piloted the lumbering plane with its 207-foot wingspan toward the eastern French city of Lyon at a cruising speed of just 43.5 miles an hour.

Before landing in Madrid in the early hours of Friday, Borschberg will face other challenges, including having to overfly the Pyrenees, the mountains that separate France and Spain.

Just in case things go disastrously wrong, Borschberg has a parachute inside his tiny cabin that he hopes never to use. "When you take an umbrella it never rains," he joked in a satellite call with The Associated Press.

World War II Kittyhawk fighter found in Sahara, shedding light on pilot's fate

    Jakub Perka

The discovery of the Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk in the Sahara Desert was described by one military historian as "the aviation equivalent of Tutankhamun's Tomb."

By Michele Neubert, NBC News, and Ian Johnston, msnbc.com

A remarkably well-preserved fighter plane that crashed in the Sahara Desert during World War II has been found 70 years later, shedding new light on the pilot's struggle to survive.

The American-made Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk was discovered by a Polish oil worker, Jakub Perka, who was exploring the desert in Egypt, The Telegraph newspaper reported. It was about 200 miles from the nearest town.

It is believed that the pilot, Dennis Copping, 24, ran into trouble while flying in 1942 but still managed to land the plane on the sands, the paper said.

Military historian Andy Saunders said that the British flight sergeant "must have survived the crash" because a photograph of the plane showed a parachute had been put up on the side of the plane, apparently as a form of shelter, The Telegraph reported.

"The radio and batteries were out of the plane, and it looks like he tried to get it working. If he died at the side of the plane, his remains would have been found," Saunders added. "Once he had crashed there, nobody was going to come and get him. It is more likely he tried to walk out of the desert but ended up walking to his death. It is too hideous to contemplate."

He said the discovery was "the aviation equivalent of Tutankhamun's tomb."

    Air enthusiasts excited
The Vintage Wings of Canada website speculated that the plane had a mechanical problem, ran out of fuel or that the pilot simply got lost.

The website said there seemed to be a growing consensus that the plane's serial number was ET 574, based on what could be made out from photographs. If this is confirmed, the website said it was possible that Canadian flying ace James "Stocky" Edwards had previously flown the fighter.

    Jakub Perka

The plane's cockpit is in remarkable though dusty condition.

Journalist sacked for defying censors to report German WWII surrender gets apology

"To say we, at Vintage Wings, are excited by this find is an understatement," the website said.

It expressed concern the plane had been "seriously vandalized -- a travesty the whole aviation world seems unable to stop."

Parades commemorate Soviet victory in World War II

Michael Creane of the Royal Air Force Museum in London, U.K., told NBC News that it was "incredible" the plane had not been submerged by the shifting sands of the desert.

He said the museum was "hell-bent" on bringing the aircraft to the facility, although he said there were "lots of hoops to jump through."

Relatives wait in anguish as Indonesian rescue workers search for plane crash victims

    Beawiharta / Reuters

Indonesian soldiers, part of a rescue team, take a break as they search for the wreckage of a Russian Sukhoi aircraft near Bogor May 10. A rescue team found no survivors but several bodies on Thursday when it arrived at the wreckage of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 passenger plane that crashed into Mount Salak during an exhibition flight with 45 people on board.

Indonesian soldiers consult a map before climbing Salak Mount to find the crash site of Russian-made plane Sukhoi Superjet 100, in Cipelang, Bogor, Indonesia, on May 10. Rescuers on 10 May found bodies near the wreckage of a Russian passenger plane that crashed into an Indonesian mountain with 47 people on board. 'Rescue workers have reached the crash site and found the wreckage and bodies of victims,' said Gagah Prakoso, a spokesman for the National Search and Rescue Agency. Air Vice Marshal Daryatmo, the national search-and-rescue chief, said the bodies would be airlifted on Friday because the terrain made it difficult to transport them by land. The Sukhoi Superjet-100 appeared to have crashed into Mount Salak at a high speed from 6,000 feet and disintegrated, Prakoso said.

Reuters reports --  A rescue team found several bodies but no survivors on Thursday in the wreckage of a Russian plane that crashed into a mountain in Indonesia during an exhibition flight with 45 people on board.

Russia said it would take part in the investigation of the crash of its first all-new passenger jet since the fall of the Soviet Union, a Superjet 100 aircraft that went missing on Wednesday about 40 miles south of Jakarta.

It was carrying Indonesians including journalists and businessmen, eight Russians including embassy officials, pilots and technicians, as well as two Italians, one French citizen and one American, said Vladimir Prisyazhnyuk, the head of Sukhoi Civil Aircraft.

"We haven't found survivors," Gagah Prakoso, spokesman of the search and rescue team, told Indonesia's Metro TV.

Crisis averted after landing gear fails on United flight

    Saed Hindash / The Star-Ledger

A United Shuttle Air Express passenger plane with hydraulic problems made an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport Monday evening, forcing the temporary closure of the airport. No injuries were reported.

    The Star-Ledger's Tomas Dinges reports:

As a passenger plane with hydraulic problems was getting ready to make an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport Monday evening, passengers thought they were going to die.

"We were saying our prayers because we just thought it was the end," said Steve Parowski, a passenger from Franklin Lakes. "I sent a text to my sons letting them know that I love them, and I hope everything works out."

Parowski was among the 71 people aboard the United Shuttle Air Express traveling from Atlanta to Newark — a flight that was uneventful until the commuter jet was preparing for landing and its front landing gear failed to deploy, authorities said. Parowski said as soon as he got off the plane and he knew he was fine, he called his sons on the phone and told them "I landed and I'm alive."

Rescuers work near an overturned Russian-made Tupolev 134 passenger jet at the airfield outside Osh on Dec. 28. The packed TU-134 flipped over and caught fire on landing in the southern Kyrgyz city today injuring at least six people, officials and witnesses said.

Amazing that all the passengers survived.

    AP reports:

The Kyrgyz government says that 31 people have been injured in the crash-landing of a passenger jet.

Kyrgyzstan's Health Ministry said the Soviet-built Tu-134 jet was carrying 95 passengers and six crew when it crash-landed in deep fog Wednesday at the airport of the southern city of Osh.

Emergency Situations Minister Kubatbek Boronov said the plane flying from the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek was damaged when it made a rough landing in Osh. He didn't elaborate, but eyewitnesses said the jet rolled off the runway, broke its wing, overturned and caught fire.

Boronov said that 17 of the 31 injured were hospitalized.

The Tu-134 is a two-engine jet that has remained in service with many post-Soviet carriers.
