Chasing world's largest waves for chance at history

McNamara currently holds the world record for the biggest wave surfed after riding a 78-foot breaker in Nazare, Portugal, on Nov. 1, 2011 but on Jan. 28, 2013 was thought to have gone better at the same location.

Not one to turn away from big waves, surfer Garrett McNamara went back to the shores of Nazare, Portugal, to continue his quest for the world’s largest wave. A day earlier, McNamara possibly set a new record for surfing an estimated 100-foot wave, but the exact size of the wave is yet to be officially confirmed.

"Personally, it was very challenging. You just have to stay in the moment, stay focused on what you're doing,” said McNamara to SurferToday.com.

Below are photos of what may go down in history as the day McNamara surfed a 100-foot wave.

Terrifying. Where does the wave finally deposit him? On the beach? Among the rocks? How does he get back to shore in all that churning water? Being a "desert rat," I don't "do" water......at least not oceans and huge lakes....so while the questions may be elementary to many, I am curious as to how …

Enormous wave dwarfs surfer Garrett McNamara along coast of Portugal

    By Natalia Jimenez, NBC News

Surfer Garrett McNamara catches what could be the largest wave ever surfed, off the coast of Nazare, Portugal, on Jan. 29. The estimated 100-foot wave, if confirmed, would beat the current world record of 78 feet, which McNamara has held since 2011. According to SurferToday.com:

Garrett McNamara traveled from Hawaii and hit the water with Kealii Mamala - with whom he surfed waves generated by glacier blocks in Alaska - Kamaki Worthington and Hugo Vau, as their support team on the jet ski. The conditions in Nazaré were heavenly perfect. Light southern winds and strong swell coming from northwest and hitting the local canyon as it should.

Judges with Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards will work to determine the actual size of the wave.

VIDEO: McNamara rides massive wave in Portugal

McNamara's surfing skills developed when his family moved to Hawaii from Pittsfield, Massachusetts, when he was 11 years old. As a professional big wave surfer, he regularly seeks out the largest waves in the world.

"It's like riding a moving mountain," said McNamara to TODAY after he broke the last world record in 2011. Watch the video.

Emergency services say a high-speed intercity train rear-ended a local train waiting to enter a station in central Portugal, derailing several carriages leaving a pile of wreckage on Portugal’s main north-south line, slightly injuring 21 people. Officials said the local train was waiting to pull into a station near Coimbra, 120 miles north of the capital, Lisbon, when the northbound intercity train slammed into it from behind at 9.15 p.m. (2100 GMT) on Monday

Riot police stand guard outside the Portuguese parliament beside a fire set by demonstrators during a protest against the government's 2013 budget, on Oct. 15, 2102 in Lisbon. Portugal's government is taking the bailed-out country deeper into austerity, announcing sharp tax increases next year that risk worsening a recession and stoking public discontent.

Anger over Portugal austerity reaches steps of Lisbon parliament

Reuters reports on the latest budget cuts that have strained the patience of Portuguese voters:

With the country suffering its worst recession since the 1970s, the 2013 budget is set to introduce sharp income tax hikes, which could amount to up to two or three months' wages for middle-income workers, to ensure the country meets its budget goals under the bailout. Finance Minister Vitor Gaspar has described the planned tax increases as "enormous".

Some economists say that the measures, which will also include pension cuts, a financial transaction tax and higher property taxes, could push Portugal into a recessive spiral like Greece, further undermining Europe's German-inspired austerity drive for the euro's highly indebted countries. Its a great game ......But very misunderstood in the US. It is very strategic and thus can't really hold the attention of our sports fans. There are a lot of intricacies that cannot be understood unless you have either played the game or followed it very closely. I love it and miss playing ....

Drought conditions fuel wildfire in northern Spain

Photos by Miguel Riopa / AFP - Getty Images

A firemen runs close to a fire burning near the village of Castrelo do Val, in Ourense, northwestern Spain, on March 27, 2012. A firefighter was killed fighting one of the wildfires that have devastated thousands of acres due to drought in northwestern Spain.

A villager looks at a fire burning close to the village of Castrelo do Val in northwestern Spain on March 27, 2012.

Associated Press reported on March 15 2012:

The landscape in northern Spain is now a palette in shades of ugly. Pale brown fields without crops or pasture stretch off into the distance. A pond for watering sheep has shriveled into a dustbowl. An irrigation canal down the road holds only stagnant water, murky from so much sediment and so little flow.

In Galicia, Spain's lushly green northwestern corner where it usually rains all the time, pastures have no grass this year. Farmers there and elsewhere are being forced to ship in food for sheep and cattle at a cost of $2.6 million a day, according to ASAJA national spokesman Gregorio Juarez.
