Grape pickers dance while treading grapes in a traditional stone tank at Quinta do Vesuvio vineyard, Sept. 19, near the village of Foz Coa, northern Portugal. After spending the day picking grapes on the slopes of the Douro Valley, in the evening the workers tread the grapes to be used in the production of Port wine. Port wine sales have been falling steadily since the turn of the century, jeopardizing the livelihoods and way of life of thousands of people along the Douro Valley. Picture received Oct. 23.

    This looks dangerous to me.

Portugal has been battling wildfires due to drought and heat since July. I'm sure they were hoping October would bring some relief.

Youths protest against unemployment, austerity measures in Spain and Portugal

    Andrea Comas / Reuters

Demonstrators listen to a speaker at Madrid's landmark Puerta del Sol on May 20. Spanish youths vowed on Friday to continue demonstrating against unemployment and mainstream politics, and the government thought twice about enforcing a ban on election weekend protests that could provoke clashes.

Portuguese and Spanish youths sit late on May 19 in front of the Spanish Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal, to protest against the economic crises and sky-high jobless rate in their countries.

AFP reports: Spanish youths have camped in main squares across the country since May 15 in the largest spontaneous protests since Spain plunged into recession after the collapse of a property bubble in 2008. Calling for "Real Democracy Now", the protesters lament Spain's 21-percent jobless rate, economic crisis, politicians in general and corruption. Protests have also been seen in neighboring Portugal.

A young man shares the backseat with his family's statue of Our Lady of Fatima after attending a celebration Mass at the metropolitan cathedral in Managua, Nicaragua, Friday May 13, 2011. The family took the new statue to the cathedral to be blessed on Fatima's feast day. Nicaraguans marked the Catholic belief of the Virgin Mary's apparitions to three shepherd children in a field near Fatima, Portugal in 1917, with a procession and Mass.

While I would imagine that this event is solemn, yet festive, the expression on this young man's face makes it look as though he has been stuck at the kids' table at Thanksgiving dinner.

I found it funny that the coat hanger in the car made it look as if the kid had horns. Kind of a ying/yang or good vs. evil moment in time.

I love the timeless quality of this image. The light and the color saturation are beautiful. It has the quality of a movie scene from the 1930s or 40s.
