Volcanic ash blankets town and lake in Argentina

Officials in the Argentine town of Villa La Angostura have asked for the area to be declared an emergency zone after up to a foot of ash fell in the area, and the Health Ministry has deployed psychologists to counsel anxious residents, Reuters reports.

Ash from a volcanic eruption in Chile's Puyehue-Cordon Caulle chain cover parts of the water surface of the Nahuel Huapi Lake in the Argentine resort town of Villa La Angostura on June 16. A volcano across the border in Chile erupted on June 4 after being dormant for decades, sending a towering cloud of ash into the air and forcing the cancellation of hundreds of flights as far away as Australia.

@Chopswell - Current understanding of previous periods of mass extinction seems to point to an extraterrestrial cause, that is an impact from an asteroid, rather than any geological event. Gaea, like any other 'God' or 'Goddess', would be better discussed on a religous thread.

Rock, ash fill river after volcano eruption in Chile

    Roberto Candia / AP

Police officers watch the overflowing river Nilahue after the eruption of the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano in Los Venados, Chile, on June 9, 2011. The volcano erupted Saturday after remaining dormant for decades, causing the evacuation of about 3,500 people in the nearby area and carrying ash across the Andes to Argentina.
