Abu Dhabi Racing's Emirati driver Mohammed al-Sahlawi veers off a cliff during the first stage of the Jordan Rally, round three of the FIA Middle East Rally Championship, in Sweimeh near the Dead Sea on May 10, 2013. The drivers escaped unhurt.

    By The National
Two of Abu Dhabi Racing's drivers fell foul of the tough terrain on the opening day of Rally Jordan, with one falling 20 feet off a cliff while another was left dangling over the edge.

While Mohammed Al Sahlawi and his co-driver Allan Harryman got away with their close encounter as their Citroen DS3 R3 2WD car was pulled away from the edge by spectators and marshals, Majed Al Shamsi and his co-driver John Higgins were not as fortunate.

They slid off at the same point as Al Sahlawi, falling 20 feet and landing on its roof. Al Shamsi was taken to a clinic with his shoulder in a sling for a precautionary check-up, but his Irish co-driver John Higgins said: "We're both fine."

Higgins added: "We came to a loose sharp left with a big drop, and the back wheels went over the edge. The car just fell back over the edge and landed upside down." Continue reading

'Don't race on our blood': Protesters try to put the brakes on Bahrain's Grand Prix

By Reem Khalifa, The Associated Press

Organizers of Bahrain's Grand Prix said Thursday that sporadic protests against the race and violent unrest across the Gulf nation do not pose a threat to the premier international event in the kingdom.

Anti-government groups have stepped up protests against the race in attempts to embarrass authorities, but the demonstrations have been mostly isolated to areas that are hotbeds of opposition to the ruling royal family. Rights groups also are using the race to criticize Bahrain's arrests and other security crackdowns.

Bahrain has faced more than two years of violence between the Sunni-led government and majority Shiites seeking a greater political voice.

Built in 1970, the Agassiz Speedway is a quarter mile oval track nestled in the side of the Agassiz Mountain about 90 minutes east of Vancouver, B.C. Owned and operated by the non-profit Kent Raceway Society, the track hosts about 12 races a season beginning in April and running through October.

Vancouver-based photographer Andy Clark spent his Saturday nights photographing life around the speedway.

Clark wrote on the Reuters blog: I have always enjoyed car racing. I spent, though a few said mis-spent, some of my formative teenage youth on darkened summer highways north of Toronto in the late 1960s, riding in muscle cars and drag racing until either the wee hours of the morning or the cops chased us away. Putting the 'mow' in motor sports: Racers fire up their rides in Germany

    Carsten Rehder / EPA

A man competes in a ride-on mower race in Aukrug-Homfeld, Germany, April 14. Around a dozen teams compete with their modified ride-on mowers with up to 120 horsepower and top speeds of more than 60 mph.

What good is a lawn mower if it's buried behind the tangle of garden tools, the dog's outgrown crate, the exer-cycle with the missing seat, and all the other accumulations that the seasons change from storage to wreckage, from thriftiness to plain mess?

But if that mower seems useless, what if, like fanatics from England, Australia, and 45 of our own states, you remove the grass-cutting blades so that you can race your machine, thereby turning "a weekend chore into a competitive sport"? To paraphrase a few of the racers' spouses: "Only a man could come up with something like this."

-- Michael J. Rosen on Mower Racing World Championships, 2camels.com
