Two Syrian refugee encampments in Lebanon's eastern Bekaa valley were completely immersed in water Tuesday after the Litani river flooded and the water came pouring into tents. The flood forced dozens of Syrian refugees to leave in search for alternative shelter along with their water-soaked and muddied belongings.

In a Jordanian camp, Syrian refugees attacked aid workers with sticks and stones on Tuesday, frustrated after cold, howling winds swept away their tents and torrential rains flooded muddy streets. Continue reading.

Jordan opened the camp with 2,000 tents to accommodate refugees near the border. Diplomats say around 115,000 Syrians have fled their country, mostly to Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan, to escape the 17-month rebellion against President Bashar al-Assad. The Jordanian authorities say around 130,000 Syrians have come to Jordan since the uprising began, but diplomats say not all of them are classified as refugees.

Water has been a precious resource with which aid agencies have struggled. Yida refugee camp has swollen to nearly 60,000, as the refugees flee from South Kordofan in North Sudan with new arrivals at 300-600 a day.  The rainy season has increased the numbers of sick children suffering from diarrhea and severe malnutrition as the international aid community struggles to provide basic assistance to the growing population, as most have arrived with only the clothes they are wearing. Many new arrivals walked from 5 days up to 2 weeks or more to reach the camp.
