Zack Sowders and Gage Lee, both 16, of Bowling Green, Ky., wait to be rescued on April 1, after their boat overturned in the rapids of the Barren River while they were fishing.

A Bowling Green Fire Department firefighter became trapped in Kentucky’s Barren River as he attempted to assist in the rescue of two teenage fishermen that were stranded in the rapids after their boat overturned.

The Bowling Green Daily News reported:

The strong current caused the rescue worker to be pulled across the rocky terrain, BGFD spokeswoman Marlee Boenig said. The man, whose name was not released, suffered an ankle injury during the incident.

“He was stuck and when he broke loose, I guess the current pulled him,” Boenig said. Continue reading.

Rescue workers were on the scene for about 90 minutes and managed to pull the teens to safety without further incident.

Mayflies rush to reproduce before dying in Hungary

    Laszlo Balogh / Reuters

Long-tailed mayflies (Palingenia longicauda) fly over the surface of the Tisza river near Tiszainoka, 84 miles southeast of Budapest on Wednesday. Millions of these short-lived mayflies engage in a frantic rush to mate and reproduce before they perish in just a few hours during "Tiszaviragzas" or Tisza blooming season from late spring to early summer every year.

The Dusi Canoe Marathon takes place on the Msunduzi River, drawing thousands of paddlers each year. Prior to the race this year, organizers hunted for a crocodile out of concerns for canoeists' safety. In the end, the race was won by defending champions Andy Birkett and Jason Graham, who finished in about five and a half hours.

    The Danube is running dry

    Ivan Milutinovic / Reuters

A boat is stranded on dry land along the Danube river bank in Belgrade on Dec. 2, 2011. Record low water levels have pushed up power prices across the Balkans and may force local utilities to further boost expensive power imports to meet demand.

    AP reports

"This is a disaster," said Branko Savic, the manager of a privately owned Danube shipping company in Serbia that he says is operating at only a third of its capacity. "Traffic on the Danube is practically nonexistent. . . We are in dire need of enormous amounts of water, rain, or melting snow in order to better the situation."

"In my many years of experience as a boat captain, I don't remember a drought as harsh as this one," said Anton Balasz, whose ship is among those stuck where exposed sand banks are preventing boats from passing. Read more...

    Srdjan Suki / EPA

Vessels carrying more than 1,000 tons were blocked in this area of Belgrade earlier this week because the water level was lower than normal. For river traffic to resume water levels would have to rise by at least 19 inches, but meteorological services forecast no rain in the coming days.
