Salisbury Cathedral hosts 'Darkness to Light' Advent procession

    Matt Cardy / Getty Images

The interior of Salisbury Cathedral is illuminated by trails of candles carried by choristers during the annual 'darkness to light' advent procession on Nov. 25, in Salisbury, England. The service - which begins with the medieval cathedral in total darkness and silence before the Advent Candle is lit at the West End -is one of the most popular services of the liturgical year. The annual advent service, which takes place over three nights, is a mix of music and readings during which two great candlelit processions move around the different spaces in the 750-year-old building which, by the end, is illuminated by almost 1300 candles and is a spectacular start to the Christmas season. Editor's note: A long exposure was used in making the image and pictures were received Nov. 27.

The scale of old religious buildings -- whether they be cathedrals, temples or mosques -- are so impressive to me. The construction of Salisbury Cathedral began in 1220, and considering the architects and builders lacked the technology and machinery that we have today, I find it simply amazing that such a project and many others like it were completed at the time. Salisbury Cathedral has gone through a number of restorations, and I wonder, will people find the structures built today worthy of preservation and restoration in the future, as construction standards, for the most part, certainly don't seem to be as high.

Sean Henry's sculpture Man with Cup (2008) is exhibited on the West Front of Salisbury Cathedral on August 2, 2011 in Salisbury, United Kingdom. The exhibition, 'Conflux: A Union of the Sacred and the Anonymous', features over 20 contemporary sculptures of dramatically different scales occupying vacant plinths and open spaces on both the inside and exterior of the iconic 13th century building. This exhibition brings to the Cathedral the biggest single group of polychrome sculpture since the Reformation and runs until the end of October.

Placing modern figures in an ancient church

    By Phaedra Singelis, NBC News

If you ever visited an old cathedral with missing statues or broken off gargoyles, you've probably tried to imagine what was once there. But did you ever imagine putting something there you created yourself?

The artist Sean Henry told the U.K's arts guide, Culture 24, “By placing my figures on existing empty plinths and platforms and in areas where other, older sculptures would once have stood I’m interested in memorialising the everyday - in drawing the viewer’s attention to the significance of our own experience of the here and now."

I agree that it is a really cute idea. Placing modern day sculptures next to older ones really makes you pause to appreciate the past and the present simultaneously. In some ways it also brought the mundane to life.

Sarah Flanagan inspects Water-Towers, Bruce Munros newest light and sound installation, in Salisbury Cathedral's medieval cloisters on Jan. 13 in Salisbury, England. Located in the south and west cloisters of the 750-year-old Cathedral and on display until the end of February, the installation by artist Bruce Munro comprises sixty-nine glowing towers, made from 15,000 stacked recyclable water bottles filled with 30 tons of water, illuminated with fiber optics and specially commissioned LED projectors that change color to music.
