Satellite spots tanks near university housing complex in city of Homs

    AP

This satellite image provided by Digital Globe shows three Syrian military tanks near the Al Baath University housing complex and the Baba Amr neighborhood in the southwest section of Homs, Syria, Friday, Feb. 10, 2012.

AP reports: DigitalGlobe said the images were taken late Friday morning Syrian time by the company's WorldView 2 satellite from about 480 miles above the Earth. Stephen Wood, director of DigitalGlobe's analysis center, said the photos show tanks, armored personnel carriers and other armored vehicles in the southern part of the city, some of them near apartment buildings.

The satellite images show an increase in the level of army activity in and around Homs from the previous 24 hours, Wood said.

U.S. ambassador Robert Ford spoke to NBC's Andrea Mitchell about the government violence that's being blamed on terrorists.

A combination of images from GeoEye's IKONOS high-resolution satellite, made available to Reuters on April 29, 2011, shows an overview of the path of destruction after a massive tornado touched down in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on April 28, 2011 (L) and an image taken April 4, 2006. President Barack Obama promised federal aid on Friday to the tornado-ravaged U.S. South, where deadly twisters have killed at least 339 people and caused billions of dollars in damage. Flying into Tuscaloosa, where a tornado touched down on April 27, 2011, Obama and his family saw a wide brown scar of devastation several miles long and hundreds of yards wide.

In this June 16, 2010 satellite image provided by NASA, Papua New Guinea's Manam Volcano releases a thin, faint plume, as clouds cluster at the volcano's summit. The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA's Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite took this image. The clouds may result from water vapor from the volcano, but may also have formed independent of volcanic activity. The volcanic plume appears as a thin, blue-gray veil extending toward the northwest over the Bismarck Sea.
