Agence France Presse reports — A headteacher in the Georgian city of Rustavi has found an unusual way to get children's early education off the ground -- by transforming an airplane into a kindergarten.

Gari Chapidze bought the old but fully functional Yakovlev Yak-42 from Georgian Airways and refurbished its interior with educational equipment, games and toys but left the cockpit instruments intact so they could be used as play tools.

"The idea was to create a kindergarten where children go with joy," Chapidze said. Read the full story.

Risky river crossing: Filipino kids tube to get to school

    Bullit Marquez / AP

School children use an inflated tire tube to cross a river to go to a public school in Rizal province east of Manila, Philippines, on Oct. 12, 2012.

They don't have a bus, or even a bridge. Filipino elementary school students have to use an inflated tire tube to cross a river on their way to school in a remote village in Rizal province, east of the capital Manila.

    Dennis M. Sabangan / EPA

The students have to walk for at least an hour a day to get to and from school, and are sometimes forced to skip classes or take shelter at relatives' homes if the river is swollen due to heavy rains. The community has been petitioning the local government to put up a suspension bridge in order to make the crossing easier, faster and safer.

Access to education is a problem in the Philippines, especially in rural areas, but enrollment rates remain relatively high. According to UNICEF, 85% of Filipino children are enrolled in elementary school, though only 62 percent finish high school.

Chicago students head back to school after strike

    M. Spencer Green / AP

Students gather outside Benjamin E. Mays Academy for the first day of school on Sept. 19, after Chicago teachers voted to suspend their first strike in 25 years. Union delegates voted overwhelmingly Tuesday night to suspend the walkout after discussing a proposed contract settlement with the nation's third largest school district.

More than 350,000 Chicago Public School students returned to class Wednesday after seven days off during the city's first teacher strike in 25 years.

"We feel very positive about moving forward," Chicago Teachers Union president Karen Lewis said Tuesday after the union's nearly 800-member House of Delegates voted to end the strike. "We feel grateful that we have a united union, and that when a union moves together we have amazing things happen."

Teachers said they're excited to get back to work after voting on the tentative deal article-by-article. One point even received a standing ovation: the freedom for teachers to create their own lesson plans. Full story…

Homecoming queen with Down syndrome inspires her classmates in Missouri

Erik M. Lunsford / St. Louis Post-Dispatch via AP

Senior Sara Marshall hugs Barbara Behlmann during lunch on Thursday, May 10, 2012, at Hazelwood West High School in Hazelwood, Mo. Behlmann is a homecoming queen, a cheerleader and clearly one of the most popular students at Hazelwood West High School in suburban St. Louis. She also has Down syndrome. But she was raised in a home where her parents never put limits on her, and she has taken that message to heart as she prepares to graduate Saturday.

Erik M. Lunsford / St. Louis Post-Dispatch via AP

Senior Barbara Behlmann walks to class following lunch on Thursday.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch tells the story of student Barbara Behlmann, a popular graduating senior at Hazelwood West High who has Down Syndrome:

Early on, the Behlmanns decided they would teach their daughter to do more than just survive.

"We never put limits on Barbara. We never said 'You can't do this,' or 'You're not able to do this,'" Karen Behlmann said. "It was whatever she wanted to do, then we were going to do it — whatever it took."

Speech and language therapies, at day care, school and home were constant throughout the rest of her childhood, they say. Chatter with a sister, another girl the Behlmanns adopted, helped too.

Along the way, Barbara's personality became clear — a happy, outgoing girl with no fear.

That's how her fellow cheerleaders at Hazelwood West describe her.

Students from Monsignor Bonner High School wait on Friday for an announcement about whether they will merge schools with Archbishop Prendergast High School, and not be closed.

NBC Philadelphia reports: Archbishop Charles Chaput made the announcement on Friday afternoon, saying the community support was substantial. He also pressed state lawmakers to do more - much more - to help.

In his message to lawmakers, Archbishop Chaput said, "we need expanded EITC (education-incentive tax credits) funds and opportunity scholarships to help our schools survive."  The Archbishop said that without that support, the fate of the schools would be right back to where they were a few weeks ago, when they were slated for closure.
