Italian town, pop. 598, wants to secede from ailing Italy

    By Rich Shulman

The New York Times story today doesn't really speculate if this is a publicity stunt, or a serious effort to secede. This reminds me a bit of The Mouse That Roared.

A general view of Filettino, 43 miles east of Rome, Aug. 29. Filettino, a small town in central Italy, is trying to go independent and mint its own money in protest against government austerity cuts. The town is rebelling against a proposal to merge the governments of towns with fewer than 1,000 inhabitants to save money. Filettino has only around 550 people, but instead of merging with neighboring Trevi, Mayor Luca Sellari is trying to go it alone and set up a "principality" along the lines of the famous republic of San Marino to the north.

Sudanese men unload sacks of food during a distribution by the World Food Programme in Juba on January 13, 2011.

Lentils distributed by World Food Programme during Sudan's referendum

    By John Brecher

When I see pictures like this, I wonder about the farmer who grew the lentils, if he or she had any idea that the harvest would end up feeding people in Sudan. Sudan's in the middle of a momentous decision, voting on whether the south part of the country should secede. At play are religious and ethnic divisions and also a lot of oil, which lies in the south. To see more pictures, have a look at our slideshow.

Historic re-enactors dressed in period costume stop to view the newly unveiled marker in observance of the 150th Anniversary of South Carolina's Secession from the Union on Dec. 20, 2010 in Charleston, SC. South Carolina was the first state to secede resulting in the US Civil War.

Dance, protests mark 150 years since South Carolina left US

    By Rich Shulman

I guess we are doomed to continue fighting the Civil War for at least another 150 years. Full story.

Yes, we are "doomed" to talk about the Civil War for the next 150 years in order to keep wrters focused on something to write. Afterall, the Civil War is a partof our history where 600,000 Americans lost their lives most in horrible ways and circumstances. This was a watershed period for America. P …
